Ok, so, a complaint has been raised across cyberspace on the difficulty setting up and getting started.

This probably could be solved with an installer, something free and easy to use like clickteam's install maker, or nullsoft's.

I have a couple install programs, so, I cna probably whip one up and maintain it, packagae each point release with a corresponding launcher/exe, and (maybe optional) vp's.

Thoughts?

Sounds like a pretty good idea to me :)

Would certainly lighten my workload :D

I think Fractux has an installer all set up -- he's just waiting for 3.6.

err, that's an installer for FS2 HOTU+voice+music+cb anis+FSO. He's keeping that down untill Interplay runs out of FS2 disks again.

It's easier to destroy than create though :D

i.e It's probably easier to simply remove the parts you don't need from Fractux's installer than write a new one from scratch :D

Well, I used Inno Setup Installer, [ http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php ] to write the installer script for it.

It would, literally, only take a coule of minutes to write an installer script for SCP packages. I was planning on doing this and putting them on the FTP server, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I'd be more than willing to do this. You could just log into the FTP server, and upload new release builds that you want packaged.

What I was thinking was that the SCP build would be placed in a package with all of the latest art and media VP's available.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I may have a bit of time this week to get around to doing this if you guys want.

Cheers!

P.S instead of including readme docs, I was just going to point people to the Wiki.

by all means, that way we can update the docs without having to change the package each time.

I'm guessing you are talking about something along the lines of the way DirectX or similiar applications setup.. you download a small program that downloads the code/patch/changes instead of new packadges all the time..
Fully automated, works for joe bloggs who just wants to click and play.
Rather than those of us who've been either programming, or playing around with FS for so long we know where all the maps/models/animations/missions/vp files/etc go.

A few people have also talked to me about the "user friendliness" of the launcher.
I personally felt the launcher itself was already very good, but without my FS/Gaming experience in general I probably wouldn't have a clue what to expect from fiddling with the flags..

SCP Installable Package WIP
I was looking for the thread about this in the other forum, but I guess it got deleted or moved.

Anways, I threw this together today, if an SCP member would please download it and let me know what they want changed or added.

I put together a new VP containing all of the new art that has been released, and replacing the old files so there is no overlap. It saves almost 5 MB in the final package.

Size 27.7MB [ compressed from 174MB ].

Cheers!

Nullsoft's good, Clickteams stuff is good too.

Lots of good choices, if Fractux has something,  I am keen on seeing it.

Fractux, drop by IRC or catch me on the IM program of choice, I'd love to see what you have in mind :)

Well, you are more qualified than me in that respect, so if you're going to do it, then that's cool.

Cheers!
