1) has been discusses, IIRC, it was said to require some ugly code changes, not sure though.
2) isn't this already possible somehow?
3) make a skybox consisting out of 2 objects, one with the "inner" subspace tex, one with the outer, make both texes ani's, 2 frames, one frame the subspace tex, one frame empty. calculate the frametime into something pretty for your mission, and make the models rotate to create the subspace effect. you'd make the normal space background normally. you could make some more frames for transitions. only one code change needed: animated transperency. if you can make the subspace thingy in one sphere like object, you don't need any coding.
4) dunno why you'd need one of these, really.
5) has been thought about, IIRC, wait for Phreak's tertiary weapons system.
