just FYI, when a vaccin (for another disease) came available in Holland a couple of dozen years ago, we had the local Protestant Church ***** about it not being the will of God.

religions influence on politics and day to day matters?

it was what spiked the debate on mandatory vaccinations for transmittable diseases

Not really. Many of those affected are probably quite smart and fit but unfortunately were born in a country where they remain poor and uneducated.

This isn't the same as people from the 1st world who refuse treatment for their children on religious grounds. Most of those affected won't get to make a choice on the matter.

I fail to see how Stephen Hawkins is evident of the flaws in natural selection.

For a start, he's still alive. And any inability to procreate due to his disability is negated by the fact that he's smart enough, rich enough and famous enough to have scores of women willing to be knocked up by his extracted sperm.

If anything, he supports natural selection.

Stephen Hawking has been hit by a car a bunch of times, dealt with his disability and is still alive to tell about it and write books that I can't even begin to fathom.

The mans got some serious will to live...thats natural selection for me enough.

I can but also can't believe that story.  I'm generally starting to develop apathy for people who want to hurt other people like that.  Polio injections aren't a western bred conspiracy...

It is a sad situation, isn't it Ice? I wonder sometimes, how such heroism and worthiness can be found in mankind, right alongside hurtful, horrible beings.

It's a moot point..... what if Steven Hawkings wasn't paraplegic?  What if Einstein or any other scientists had failed to discover some crucial thingybob or other?  etc......

Of course, you could say the issue is not just if something happens, but also when......

Exactly Aldo. Someone would eventually have thought of it but when?

As an example the ancient Greeks knew that the world was round. Think about how long it took for people to figure that one out again after the Dark Ages even though technology had improved in general.
