How do I get the shield animation to show up on my hud? I've included the animation and modified the hud.tbl and ships.tbl files to accomidate, but all I see in the game is a weird, messed up picture that looks nothing like the one I assigned. What am I doing wrong?

Also, is there any way to make FRED happy with ships that don't have any missile slots? I designed a ship that's supposed to only have primaries, but FRED bugs me about having a ship without any secondary weapons.

Not much you can do about the ship with no secondaries thing, loadout and the HUD will be a bit finiky.  However, you should still be able to do it.  A secondary bank with 0 capacity might be the safest solution.

As for the shield, they have to be in a special pallate to work most likely.  Consult the FAQ.

Erm, anyone know how to set something to 16-bit grayscale in Paint Shop Pro?

[Edit] Actually at the moment, I could use any (free) way to convert an image into 16-bit grayscale...

[Edit2] Okay, now I'm just confused. The tutorial says I need 16-bit grayscale, but the animation builder requires 8-bit graphics to convert, and the hud shield image has to be an animation...now I don't know what to do! Aah!

OK. Get Aniview. Save a frame from a Volition Hud Ani. Open it in PSP and save the pallette as HUD (or whatever). Then open the palette into your image, and all the other images. Combine these into your ani and you're good to go.

NB Also - if you're using Vanilla FS2, no hud anis will show up after your 40th, or your 80th in FSO. it wont break the parser or warn you or anything, it'll just refuse to show up. So count your anis, and try putting it up the top of the list too.
