Texture error - need help
Hi All,

Did a quick search through the forums and couldn't find this problem reported.  If it's already answered please pop me in the right direction.  Thanks :)

I've ben trying to import objects into FS2 using Truespace 6.6 for the objects, POF Constructor Suite for the conversion and both FRED2 and Modelview32 to look at the models.

Whenever I convert to a POF file and try to see the file in modelview it does not show the texture (although it shows the name).  FRED2 also does not see the texture.

The object is just a simple cube + local light.

I've done the following:

- UV mapped and textured the cube.
- tried saving as a truespace 4.3 object.
- made sure the texture + object name length are under 8 characters (just in case)
- checked in POF to see if the name of the texture is there once I import the TS model (it is)
- there are no LOD models tho.

I've gone through all the tuts I can find but nothing seems to mention this problem and I've tried everything I can think of in terms of the programs being used.

Could anyone offer help and advice?

Thx,

Eli.

the model needs to be a 8 bit PCX.

click the link under my name for a lot of information about modding. While you're there, go to the SCP section and follow the installing guide.

Have you saved the textures as an 8-bit PCX file? If you're using standard FS2 (not FS2 open) only that format is supported.

BTW :welcome:

EDIT : kasperl beat me to it :)

Thanks for the replies and the welcome guys.  But I'm still having the same problem :(

Using PSP 7 I saved a copy of the texture as a .pcx file in the \maps folder in the Freespace 2 directory.  It still doesn't find it.  Is this the right folder for it?  Does PSP 7 save .pcx files as 8 bit?  I tried to check using the help file but no info.  Also tried saving it as a .pcx using irfanview....didn't work either.

@ kasperl - thanks for the sites.  Unfortunatley I'm blocked by my ISP so can't view the SCP page.  No idea why they've blocked that off.

Thx,

Eli.

are you sure?

also, when you are using PSP7, go to:
Colours--> reduce colour depth (at the bottom) --> 8 bit.

then play around with the screen you get to get the best palet result. then save as PCX.

1-save as 8bit pcx
2-be sure that the truespace model use a texture of any format but with the same name of the pof textures
3-put the pof textures in the \map folder
4-fs2 won't work with textures higher than 256x256, will use only textures mupltiple of 2 (2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256), may not work if textures are not square

Thx for the help gents, but still no result.  Made sure it's a 256 x 256 8 bit pcx file, it's in the maps directory, it's the same name as the TS texture is.  The name of the texture is showing up in both POF and Model Viewer - but it's not finding it.

Couple of things:

- In POF, once I hit cob to pof I'm getting a pure white object in the SDL_asp window.  I assume this means it's not finding the texture at this point?
- Under the conversion/options in POF there it is a directory path for textures.  I've set this to the directory where the truespace texture is located.  Is this correct?

Is there anything else you can suggest?  I even went so far as to extract a texture from the game, changed the name of the original to my texture, move it to the \maps folder, made a copy of it, convert the copy to JPG, apply it in truespace and then try to convert the model that way.  Still no texture found.

Sry for all the questions, but I've been at this all day and it's driving me nuts.

is the tex name under 5 characters?

try just texing it with some standard tile, using that exact filename. just convert the standard tile to bmp, leave it in the maps dir, use that in TS, convert, and pray?

Yes, it's under 5 characters.

Should the TS texture be in the maps directory as well?

dunno, it never hurts to try....

don't put any jpegs there though, if you use FSO that'd get loaded....

Nope :(  Removed all the graphics files from the \maps directory, saved a bmp and pcx version to \maps, applied the bmp to the TS model and tried to convert.   No go.

In POF I'm still getting a pure white object, it doesn't seem to be finding the texture for conversion at that point.  Do any of you guys use TS 6.6?

Texture error - need help
no, 5.1, but i'm no MODder.

is the pof in /data/models?
do you have more then one FS dir?

Yes, the POF file is in there.  If I open it with modelview it displays the model itself, and it shows the name of the texture under the texture tab, it just doesn't find the texture itself.

Only have one FS installtion, but I am working on 2 HD's.  One has the TS objects, and the other has the FS installation.

This is what I get in modelview:

.

You can see that it has the right name of the texture.

Looks like it's fixed.

It finds the textures when they're in the \model directory, not the maps directory.  No idea whatsoever why that is tho.....

Thx for the help guys.

That is not right! :wtf:

Very strange. FS2 shouldn't actually care which sub-folder of the data folder you put things in. If I remember correctly the sub-folders are just there to keep things tidy. FS2 checks them all.

But oh well if it works that's good enough for me.

Are we going to get to see this ship then? :)

@ karajorma - yeah, I know it's weird.  Goes against everything I've read online as well.  It works tho ;)  The ships are just tests so they're just simple shapes, this community: http://www.netbattletech.com/hpguplink/index.php is looking at using FS2 as an addition to it's MW4:Mercenaries league to add more variety.  So some of us are trying to see how tough it would be to mod the game.  Please feel free to drop by :)

@ kasperl - nah, was talking about both the game and modelview.  Texture only appears in both of them if it's in that folder...

If this mod does get the go-ahead from the league then you'll prolly find several of us in here asking more questions ;)

EDIT: forgot to ask one more thing.  So far as I can tell capital ships (ships with turrets) cannot be piloted by a player in single or multi games.  Is this accurate?

In my experience, for displaying textures:

I don't think POF Suite likes the original FS2 textures, since I can't get any of them to display. But it textures any of the original FS2 ships in gray if I specify the main freespace 2 directory (c:\freespace2 for example) under Texture Path in the options menu. Otherwise they just show up as stark white. However, if I put custom textures for my own ships in the freespace2/data/maps directory, they show up on the custom ships just fine.

For ModelViewer, just make sure the textures are in the same directory as the model. (Or if they're in the /data/models directory, the textures can be in the /data/maps directory, I guess.)

Works for me anyway :P

They can be but it involves a bit of table editing to make it work and even then the capship has to be made invulnerable to stop the game crashing when it tried to display damage to lots of subsystems on screen.
