How do shields work?
I didn't see anything on a search so I'll just ask before I go try some testing for myself. How do shields work? Does the mesh just determine where the flash shows up when the ship is hit by something, or shots actually hit the shield mesh itself? If so, does that mean you could have ships with huge shields that could be flown inside of and ignored? Or could you have ships with unbalanced shields, perhaps a huge dish-shaped mesh instead? Maybe just having gaps in the shields so only part of the ship is protected?

Just curious.

I'm not sure I quite understand you. :) AFAIK, the shield mesh determines both where the flash shows up, and the shots actually hit the shield mesh itself. And yes, I'm fairly certain that you can do exactly that with the shield mesh if you chose.

AFAIK: yeah, you can deform the whole thing.

are you using FSO?

I've always wondered how FS decides which shield faces equate to the shield directions (i.e. forward, aft, port and starboard). Guess it determines the angle between the normal of the shield face and that of the ship.

betwixt?

that's filter for between (b etw een), right?

Why dost thou wish to create oddly-shaped sheild meshes?

I wast just curious if I could do things such as having a my very small interceptor ship's shields only protect the front of the ship. That way it could fly straight at a powerful bomb and blast it, with the shield taking most of the punishment. But if it were shot at from any other direction, it wouldn't haveth a shield to protect it.

Also the idea of a shield ship, with just a really big shield that served as a defense screen to cover something or another sounded neat. And maybe the idea of shielded capships that let you fly inside the shields and attack the ship itself, but attacking it from far away would just hit the shields. (Don't know if that's possible, I haven't made any capships yet.)

That is how it works mate:p

sounds nice, though I'd expect it would have to be a bubble, and i'm not sure what a shield/hull intersection would do. only one way to find out....

ah...that is something I've played with but never used in practice, only in modview and cob2fs.

it's prossible to flatten the bubble, no need to have it fully enclose the ship, you can just flatten the bubble to a discus and put it wherever you like, front or back, top or bottom..

dunno about holes, but since it is just a mesh, I do not see why you couldn't create one with holes...though you will prolly have to make the mesh itself instead of using a premade one or a generator...

Well, how did Bob make the shielded Deimos subsystems that time?

*doesn't make intersecting shields, just ship-shaped bubble ones*
