You densely have time to evade it. A jumping in sequence is not that short.

The lucifer is pretty big. You have no chance if it jumps right into you.

It all depends on your reflexes and the craft you are flying. Your craft on the piccy is obviously the Ulysses. With that, you have more than good chance to evade it. At least once or twice I had the Lucy jump right in front of me, and I had no problem evading it.
Not even the jumping out Sathanas (Dive! Dive! Dive!) killed me.
