colossus vs sathanas: double KO
i haven't seen a thread about this, so i do it: i was in that mission where you disable sathanas to allow colossus to kill it. well, everything went normally, except it took little longer that usually for colossus to dust sathanas, so colossus made it to directly behind sathanas. then colossus struck a final blow and sathanas blew up sending debris behind it, thus killing colossus with the collision damage, then i exit mission and itsays stuff about completeing mission onjectives and how i was too late and how horrible the death of colossus is and how (now dead) sathanas will propably kill everyone etc.
rather humorous when at the next mission prebriefing story moment it said how colossus' systems were 80% operational and how it would take weeks(months?) to repair its hull

im playing the GOTY version

ps: i was next to colossus when it died(hoped to go with it...) and i was dropped to >5% hull by the explosion and all collidable things were out of reach and nobody to end me, so i thought: whatever... , and jumped out

That's pretty funny. :)

You know what I find most annoying about both Bearbaiting and High Noon is that you fail the missions if you don't clear out all the enemy fighters.  I've been bitten by that more than once and it really ticks me off.  If there's a Sathanas on the loose, who cares about a few errant fighters?

they want the sathanas to arrive in there and get to colossus before player can disable the rest of the beams(you dont believe how frustrated i was when 2 of my helios dropped the beam to 20% and i had to shoot it down with akhneton... well the other beam went out quietly, but after i had killed the beam that survived 3 trebs and 2 helios, colossus was at 55%. i guess that might have been one of the reasons that caused colossus to die from the debris that hit it.)

on a completely different note, the mission i have most often died when ever playing FS2 is that gasminer hunt where that sathanas has eithere crushed me by jumping over me(both to and out of the game area) or blasting my ship to pieces with it's beams(once i was saved from the salvo, but then the sathanas started a beam and jumped, and the beam kept firing and swept it to my ship blowing it up...)

BTW SanKor you might want to look into FS2_open :)

Quote
From the time it became apparent that there would be no FS3 the most repeated complaint the community had was that Volition wouldn't release the source code so that the community could work on it themselves. However Volition did eventually release the source code and many of those within the community with programming experience got to work on it. The result was FS2_open. The project to make FS2_open has come to be known (originally enough) as the Source Code Project (SCP).

FS2_open is not FS3. Instead it is a replacement for the Freespace 2 engine. The idea is that by running FS2_open you can play the Freespace 2 main campaign and all the Freespace 2 mods with better graphics. In addition to this improvements have been made to several of the games basics to add new kinds of weapons and missions that couldn't be done before. These effects won't show up in the main campaign but will show up when special "Made for SCP" mods begin to appear.

The differences between FS2 retail and FS2_open are breathtaking. It is almost like playing a new game.

Follow the installation link below if you're interested by that :D

actually, that same thing has happened to me. the collosus was completely undamaged until a big chunk of debris (the most dangerous thing you can encounter in the game, btw) made hostile contact with the hull of the big water gun replica/colossus, and gave it a good 10% worth of damage.

If you hit the prongs of the Sathanas at just the right angle with a pair of helios torpedos you can kill the beam cannon subsystem in that one salvo.  Though it requires a bit of luck and a lot of practice to be able to do right.

so it did it kill colossus? it took some 3-4 debris to take down the colossus at 55% hull(sathanas drops so many and big debris...)

(colossus did miss sathanas with atleast 5 beams in that mission... quite a blind gunners dont you think?)

also the Koth's Orion(Repulse?) was able to hit colossus in the mission where you are to lure it to be killed by colossus: i ordered my wingmen not to attack the destroyer(i want them to survive :)) and so the colossus didn't fire and the Orion went inside(!) the colossus and after going trough for a while, suddenly it just blew up, and damaged colossus quite a bit

i dont have any problems playing the game itself(i have completed it about 5 times and i have had it for a long time(about 2 years)) i just said it because i had it shot with 3 trebs and the helios shooting failed when they hit a bit off the target(my tactic is to unload 3 trebs per beam turret, and then finish them off with 2 helios) and i had to destoy them manually with akhnetons(i sent my wingmen home, i want to get sathanas to my kill board:D for ravana is not big enough to satisfy me)

but thanks anyway, i'll try that someday

i just ended the replay of main campaign i started a while ago and when in last mission, i had 15secs left in the timer when i started my SS drive. when i had passed through the portal, game showed how my ship was being charred by the supernova while i was already safely away(game showed sparks flying from nothing):blah: and the ending movie said how i was dead and stuff... oh well, i'll just refly that mission and stick next to node to see the happy ending

ahh... no. it didn't. but it damaged it. I'm thinking the next weapon of mass destruction that the shivans has in stock is kamikaze debris producing corvettes or something. no fleet of collossi would be able to survive such an attack.

it kinda pissed me off that I'd played a perfect mission and then the debris damaged the collossus.

The least that ships should do is shoot at incoming debris (and asteroids... wait, that's been looked at before hasn't it?) and for debris to be a little less tough.  In real life such objects would be a very dangerous threat to a spacecraft, but this is Freespace.  And the debris are totally random; they can screw up a well-planned mission quite easily once, and not interfere the next time.  The solution is to bump every weapons damage and every ship's hull strength by something like 100 times, and hope for the best.  Or change the way debris are handled in the engine.

changing the tables for hull strength would screw up ramming attacks, wouldn't it?
