*very raised eyebrow* I'm surprised the doctors are so calm about it - your symptoms sound pretty serious to me. :shaking: Do you still have school on around now or are you on holiday?

dude, of all the time i have been at home, only one week was in a vacation. meaing, i missed 6 weeks of school.  fun eh?

and there isn't much the doctors can do. They give me that powder i have to inhale twice a day, but there isn't much more they can do besides just putting me on speed or something.

and i slept a bit better tonight, i just got a new bed/mattress. finally, a back that aches a little less :)

I suspected as much. I got hit by a lethargy-related illness around your age too, which put me out of action for school as well. Luckily the teachers were reasonable about it. Does the school know about the seriousness of your condition?

Well, I'm glad to hear that the back's easing up a little. :) On that note, I'm off to bed myself. Hope things continuing improving for you, kas.

yeah, the school knows. i missed 1 exam period and a god awfull number of normal tests, so they get the idea. i am going back to school half time at first, starting when i feel better, probably a week or 2 from now. and i am being let off on quite a few things, some physics practical stuff, and i don't know how many other tests.

Oh, that sure sucks. Just about the same thing hit a while ago.

I couldnt fall asleep at night, and was so tired during the day that my eyes couldnt even focus anymore. Then, I started falling asleep on about 1 PM, lying the whole day on my bed - however sleep didn't help things. In fact, when I woke up I felt as tired (or even more) than I had felt when I fell asleep. It was suspected that I had CFS, however it (fortunately) didn't last permanently, so it probably wasnt.

Uhm, in my case it had been caused by depression (and improved slowly when I had summer holidays and started to feel better again) - It still took me more than two months to get entirely well again. Now I still get some problems from time to time, but luckily nothing extreme anymore.

Have you had any problems with depressions lately? If so, it might be connected to that.
Modern man is the missing link between ape and human being.

i'll look into the CFS thingy, the genetisist i visited said it might be that.

and depression, no, not antyhing worse then noirmal really.

read, yes.  watch TV, no.  you don't want to stimulate brain activity, because that's what stops sleep, you want something relaxing, like reading.  watching TV and playing computer games are two things that make you have trouble sleeping

I had sleep problems awhile ago myself. I went days without sleep or very little of it. Caffine keep me going so I wouldn't slack off during school and day in general.

What helps me now? A nice hot bath/shower. My whole sense of time get skewed if I don't take one now.
I have big plans, now if only I could see them through.

Self-help tips.

    * Try to establish a regular routine and go to bed and rise at the same time each day. Oversleeping can cause headaches so get up once you are awake.
    * Avoid drinks containing caffeine (tea, coffee, cola & chocolate) after 6pm. Alcohol should also be avoided as this may help you fall asleep but awaken early.
    * Exercise regularly in the early evening. This will help you relax and feel tired.
    * Sleeping is difficult if you are hungry, but avoid eating a large meal close to bedtime. A warm milky drink or a snack containing lettuce (a natural sedative) may help.
    * Cammomile tea and other herbal drinks can help you to relax.
    * Essential oil of lavender can aid relaxation. Try a couple of drops on your pillow or 6 drops in a warm bath before bedtime.
    * Once in bed make sure you are comfortable and warm with a firm (not hard) mattress.
    * Learn relaxation and breathing techniques and practise regularly (see below). Relaxation tapes are available from the Health Centre for only 50p. Relaxation classes can be arranged for small groups - contact ext.3185 for details.
    * Finally, if you can't sleep try not to worry about it. You could try reading or listening to relaxing music for half and hour and then try to sleep again."

EDIT- er, this is from some uni thing - hence the second last bit :)

Don't use the computer in the two hours before you go to bed, I've heard it can convince your body that it's still daytime. :)

yeah, well, using the computer is about the only bit of recreational activity for me, my brain is too damn slow to read a book and actually understand what I'm reading, and TV, well, it's crap

1) Weed, a lots of it.
2) Booze, a lots of it. After repeating 1 and 3, the only logical follow-up is
3)music, something like Orb, Röyksopp, Underworld or Aphex Twin (lol),  and lot of it.
Jump to 1), repeat. You have the ultimate machine to render your precious body into oblivion and pass out at some point.
lol wtf

well, i said no alcohol. tabbaco or narcotics.

and why the **** am i still half a sleep after 2 double to triple sized cups of strong, black coffee? i ought to be jumping up and down from the caffeine, not having trouble keeping my eyes open.

I think leaving your house for a while, going to a walk or something, could have all the effects you want. It wakes you up and in the end you fall asleep quite easily. I do it often and it works. Not just now, I have a hangover.
lol wtf

Most of my advice comes from a more holistic approach than modern medicine.

Are you familiar with Seratonin and melatonin? Seratonin is responsible for mood and how 'awake' you feel. During the day, a healthy person's seratonin is at a fairly high level. As the day wears on, melatonin levels rise. It is melatonin that allows us to sleep.

It would seem these two chemicals are out of balance for you at the moment. So you need to get your lifestyle back 'into' balance and your hormones should hopefully follow suit.

Spending all your recreation time at the computer is probably not good for you. Perhaps going for a walk, doing exercise, doing OTHER THINGS will help. Exercise is very handy - I used to have some trouble getting to sleep(would lie in bed for a good hour or two before sleeping), but when I started doing exercise 2-3x/week, within a few weeks i was sleeping like a log.

Diet is important too. Healthy meals are good. Try to limit your carbs in the evening - these are our main source of energy. So chocolate, sweets, bread, pasta, rice, potatoes... for a good few hours before bed try not to eat any of these. A glass of milk is handy too.

Oh - herbal teas! There is valerian, but  you are supposed to cycle it 3 weeks on/1 week off. I don't have personal experience with it but I hear good things. Rooibos/Red b-ush tea is great! Its full of antioxidants, 50 times the potency of green tea, and 10 times the cancer fighting properties. Its very healthy, and is naturally caffeine-free. I find it helps to allow for restful sleep if brewing a cup for bed.

I hear some great things of Banisteros Caapi tea, too. Although in higher doses when combined with other plants it forms a 'drug' - I hate that term - that combination of plants is seen more as a sacred healer. On its own, it is perfectly healthy. In small doses, it greatly balances out seratonin and melatonin by using up seratonin receptors or somesuch (Im not familiar with the science) - everyone i know who has used this for sleeping disorders says it has lulled them into greatly restful sleep, and they awake feeling refreshed.

Oh yeah, having a warm bath or shower before bed helps too. The warmth will relax your muscles.

Some breathing exercises before bed would help both your lungs and help relax your body and mind for sleep. Breathing slow, deep breaths, maintaining your focus on the sensation of breath in and out of your nostrils is a great medicine for all sorts of stress.

And DONT think about trying to get to sleep while you are in bed. This is a horrible thought pattern than will ensure you feel irritated and unable to sleep. If you find yourself worrying, go back to the breath. or read a book/listen to relaxing music. Take your mind off the incessent thoughts of "OH FFS I AM NOT ASLEEP YET."

Best of luck man. :o good dreams!

lol. point taken.

Its just that sleep can be affected by so many factors. The things I posted should all have generally healthy effects to ones sleep - it is ofc entirely up to him how much or how little he decides to use. I'm not trying to PUSH a lifestyle on him, sorry if it came across like that.

Herbal teas, well, most of em taste like crap. and quite a few of them really, really annoy my stomache. Excersise, well, i do as much as i can without completly disabling myself. breathing excersises, well, that could help. And getting a life off-line, yeah, I know, but without friends the options are rather limited, especially since I can't stand loud music and/or large amounts of people.
