Van Helsing (Spoilers Hidden)
First of all: Muhahahahah! I just saw it in theaters. Poor North America has to wait another day. :p

Secondly (and this IS a spoiler for some):

Spoiler:
It's a parody! Along the same lines as The 5th Element, The Mummy movies, etc. The theater was laughing much of the time.

I had no conceptions or expectations before watching it, so I thoroughly enjoyed it.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

How on earth does Israel get the movie before the States?

and regarding the spoiler:

I wouldn't say any of those other movies are parodies. Sure, the 5th Element is kind of light-hearted, but I think the Mummy was just a very terrible movie, which the director made without a hint of irony. Like Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Resident Evil or Bad Boys 2 (though the first one was OK). From the trailer, Van Helsing looks really, really bad, in a Leaugue of Extrordinairy Gentlemen sort of way, though I guess you would know better than me, having seen the film.

isn't the mummy and that more of tributes than parodies? and the 5th element is good either way. I see it as a sci-fi flick, nothing less, nothing more. only with really good screenplay

gonna see van hellsing when/if I feel like it. probably will wait until dvd release and rent it or soemthnig though.

Did I just hear someone call a *Michael Bay* film a good movie? Sure, I mean it´s passable as 2-hour-killer, but a good movie???

Van Helsing sucked.  it was a ripoff.  special effects were amazing, but like most of sommers films, it was based more on special effects than storyline

That's exactly what I thought the first time I saw...
Spoiler:
...The 5th Element. Then someone brought to my attention that it was a spoof, and I realized the genius of the film. VH isn't quite up to The 5th Element's levels, but it follows the same tracks.

Went to see it at the cinema yesterday; I have a feeling if you set yourself up to believe it's going to be crap then it'll turn out to be, fortunately I had no preconceptions other than 'it has to be better than that LXG pile of poop'. Funnily enough there was also a 5 year old watching it in the row in front. ^_^

I just saw that.

I´ve got agree with stealth. Except on one point. The special FX sucked monkey balls. I mean, mr. Hyde was bloody awful. And so was the werewolf

well at first the werewolves did suck, but near the end they showed a few close-ups of the faces of the werewolf, and i thought the detail was pretty good there, it looked pretty realistic ;)

But i know what you mean, at other parts some of it just looked cheesy
