Why Day after Tomorrow is rated PG-13
The New York Times puts it this way:
Quote
"The Day After Tomorrow" is rated Pg-13. Millions of people die, but nobody swears, copulates, undresses or takes drugs.

So I guess it's okay then?
Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

Hell no.

If there's no nudity and/or swearing, then it most certainly is not 'okay'.

What's not okay is that all you buggers seem to think that stuff is required for a movie to be good.

The tone of the movie is cold, the characters spend almost the entire film trying to survive sub-zero temperatures.  They don't have time to copulate, swearing does no good, and they'd freeze to death if they undressed.

Personally, I thought it was refreshing to see a movie with teen cast members that didn't end up in the sack together.

Ermm you're missing the point of the thread:
The fact that it is ironic that a movie with millions of people dying has a rating lower than a movie with a few teenagers boinking their brains out.

Ace has such a good point.  Why is everyone afraid of sexuality but they don't flinch at a scene where thousands of fictional characters are killed.  Need to re-arrange your priorities!

They want to keep the cinemas clean.
Modern man is the missing link between ape and human being.

What does movie content have to do with cinema cleaniness (I know ours got trashed for Eps I & II)?

Beside what ARE you doing when you watch a movie (and DG please don't answer, this was for lightspeed, we know enough about you already)

I don't recall actually seeing all that many dead people.  Some Ice-Corpses, some getting swept up in the Tsunami, a couple of Tornado victims, but no massive fields of dead or much blood at all.  I mean you know whole populations are dead just by the scale of events, but there are very few violent deaths onscreen.

Thing is that we don't NEED to necessarily show gory fields of dead people and nor do we need to see steamy sex scenes all the time...its just that the fields of dead people are just fine while the other isn't.

The europeans think we're all nuts because of this imbalance.

The thing is, field of gory death don't usually disrupt the flow of the story and the steamy sex is usually misplaced and breaks the plot flow.  Not to mention that most theatres I've been in don't seem to enforce the age restriction on anything except NC-17 stuff.  I don't mind fields of death around older children and pre-adolescents, they get that anyway in video games.  But the steamy sex scenes can, and usually do, give them the wrong impression of how sex is supposed to be between two people.

in this day and age, its like trying to stop a tidal wave (hehe) with a piece of paper. The more you discourage it, the more it will happen. Stop telling the kids how to live their life, what they can wear, what words they can't say, what they can watch, and they will probably make the right decision by themselves. I remember a quote from a movie about the decades long fight to legalize marijuana, and it struck me as such a great quote...
