Hopefullly not a video card problem...
I just got a GeForce FX 5900XT, the overclocked BFG one, and I decided to test it on Inferno, becaused it had the largest lags on my old video card.  Inferno played just wonderfully all teh way through, so I deceide to play the original FS2 campaign again with all the SCP improvemtns just to have some fun.  Regretablly, when I ran the Original campaign with all the graphical improvments turned on the framerate drops to about 6 whenever a capship larger than a cain jumps in.

Hers my currnet command line:
C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fs2_open_3_6.exe -spec -glow -pcx32 -jpgtga -ship_choice_3d -fps -stats -show_mem_usage

I definatley know that it has to do with the specular mapping, but I thought that my system would have enough power to run this without any kind of major problems.  When I turn of the spec option it runs like a charm, unless I turn on AA.  I just dont get why it is running so badly.  I would appreciate any suggestions that might make this playable again.

I have also tried using various versions of Bob's recent builds, but they dont improve anyhting and just make my load times longer.

PS.  Oh and while im thinking about it:  When I turn on AA, besides a massive drop in framerate, I get blue boxes around all of the menus.

Hopefullly not a video card problem...
The blue box thingy is a known issue.

128 megs of vid mem ought to be enough, for sure. And a gig of normal RAM isn't all too shabby either. Any specific build were this started to occur? Are you using any special MODs (including media VP, what version?)? Try running FS in 1024*768.

I first noticed this in 3.6, however, as I said, it only seems to have started when I got my new video card, which was well after I got 3.6.  i have every mediavp that I know of.

hers the list:
fs2_open_x, y, and z ( think versions 3.5, 3.55, and 3.6 but im not 100% sure)
Lightspeeds glowmaps
mv_kpack

Also I am running the game in 1024*768.  Or did you mean with my desktop set to that?

Hopefullly not a video card problem...
No, I got confused after reading the DX readout.

The res is fine then.

Remove old MediaVP versions, the latest one is all you need, and thees might be an issue, not sure.

kpack?

Thanks to both Bob and Kasperl for teh help.  It seem sto be running fine now, I just made a test mission with about 3 sathani in it and it ran flawlessly, well untill I blew them in to pieces.  But even that only took the framrate down to about 30 or so fps.

pcx 32 kills my framerates too, and I have a 256Mb 9600xt. So Yeah, keep it off. You won't notice a difference anyway.

Hopefullly not a video card problem...
The launcher's description of that is somewhat misleading; it just says "use 32 bit textures," so most new people turn it on even though it doesn't really do that.
