As a regular CIC poster, I can say with absolute certainty that the average WC Forumer thinks less about Freespace then a fish thinks about space probes.

According to them, Freespace didn't sell well ( which is true ), and that led editors to think that the genre was dead, so, by extention, it prevented any WC sequels ( I'm astonished the FPS genre is still alive with all the failures it suffered from, if you follow that... kindda flawed - to stay polite - logic :p).
Then, they claim FS2 is a complete clone of Prophecy. Considering FS2 is about exactly FS1, with prettier graphics, should we have the same mindset as them, we could claim Prophecy is a FS1 rip-off.
The real fact is that they never could stand WC:P low ratings compared to FS2 :p. Well, they started that ridiculous "war" on their own and, for the most part, it's a one sided grudge, many people here like WC as well ( and don't give a damn about the CIC people, when they even know the CIC ), the problem is that the majority of the active CIC community are what you call real fanboys ( that term has taken such an insulting tone lately :p ), they dress up like federation pilots, and have fun detroying boxes from whatever spacesim that is not WC ( coz yeah, whatever they say, of course, they hate every space sim as long as it's not WC ), so they're kind of fanatics. And you know how fanatics are? ( just check HLP right now for a reality check :doubt: )

I'm assuming you mean "publishers" rather than editors - in that case, yes, Freespace 2's failure did kill several rather highly anticipated (and I'm understating here) projects, including Privateer Online. My understanding here is that the Privateer Online people saw FS2 as being the vanguard of the new wave of space sims (even referencing it as their primary competition in their pitch), so you can understand the frustration in the community when FS2 flopped at the market and those project ended up getting the ax.

Yes, because Prophecy ripped off a game which came out after Prophecy was released! Wait, no.

And I don't think I've ever seen anyone claim FS2 is a '"complete clone" of Prophecy - and hardly anyone say the same about Freespace.

I don't know what sector you live in, but over here Prophecy and FS were about equally well received.

Oh my God! They were dressed in costumes! At a costume convention! Clearly, this is a sign of the GREAT SATAN!!1111

(yeah, I know Dragon*Con isn't strictly a costume convention, but there's enough of them there for it to qualify.)

Wait, if FS2 was a failure in the field os sells, what will become of FS3 if DS really fails to create a worthy successor?

*COUGH*

Gameranking:
WC:P -> (Overall rank; 1009) (PC Rank; 322)
FS2 -> (Overall rank; 127) (PC rank; 23)

Even AVault agrees;
WC:P -> 2 1/2 stars out of 5
FS2; -> 4 1/2 stars out of 5

Well, you can't blame the game for that, though - it lived up to it's billing - it was the best ever made.

Blame Interplay for poor marketing, or the fickle nature or the market, if you blame anyone.  Although it's the market that's probably 90% to blame.  Hell, maybe WC's reputation* as being effectively an interactive movie with sparese shooting bits hurt the genre too.

*certainly, that was my perception of how the series had went.  and that was before I had even heard of Freespace.

I dunno, though - any feuding between communities of the same genre, after this many years, just seems to be a bit...petty.  But then again, who expected logic on the internet? ;) :p

EDIT; Actually, I read that thread.  It's only the admins who seem to be acting petty over it(the whole Derek smart situation), the vast majority of the normal forumites seem to be decent & understanding over why we're concerned.

I'm not here to start a flamewar, but I think these issues need to be addressed when they come up. I certainly wouldn't have picked now as the time, but it came up now, so now it is.

Well, i think - after all this time - we (FS & WC) should be on the same side.  Because both our favoured games franchises may well be up **** creek, unless one our the other releases a sequel that can somehow revitalise the market.  Unfortunately the converse - and this is what I fear - a poor sequel could have the direct opposite effect.

What would be most ironic would be that we ending fighting Mr. Smart together, defeating him and then working together to somehow make a WC-FS2 crossover that kicked ass and was declared the next bit in the WC/FS series timeline. :lol:
