Stupid question... but why won't my afterburners work?
I beat all of FS2 without using afterburners, and now am playing through FS1... but I'm sick of it heh.  When I first played FS2 3 or 4 years ago I remember using the afterburners alot, but I can't seem to get them to work in either FS or FS2 now...

When I press tab (the button bound to afterburner) the ship makes the sound, but goes no faster.  It will accelerate to my ships top speed, but I thought the whole point of afterburner was to go a lot faster than top speed (And i see my wingmen zooming by me, so I know I'm doing something wrong)... Whats up?

Are you taking power from your engines? The burners wont recharge unless the engines have some power.

Ok, give us an example. What fighter, and what speed did you hit?

well, its pretty universal.  i can get you a specific example if you want, but basically, relative to whatever power I have allotted to engines, the afterburner will only take me to my top speed speed under 100% throttle (it accelerates exactly the same as just pression full throttle).  As soon as I stop holding the afterburner button I'll go back to whatever velocity my throttle position was.  I'll be right back with an example.

This is a common problem. I believe the solution lies with runningin compatability mode, but run a search to be certain.

Right click your exe, properties, then click the Compatability tab. Check the box and pick your system (98'd probably be the stablest)

Stupid question... but why won't my afterburners work?
This became so common a while back I added it to the FAQ.

I'M PLAYING FS2 AND THE AFTERBURNER/ENERGY TRANSFER SYSTEM HAS STOPPED WORKING

This is an odd one. All the cases I've seen of it so far have occured on Windows XP and it's likely that some change in a recent update is causing it. The problem can be solved by running FS2 in compatability mode. Open up your Freespace folder and look for FS2.exe. Make a short cut for this file and position it wherever you like (Desktop or Startmenu). Right click on icon and choose properties. Click on the Compatability tab and choose which ever mode you like (I've heard that Windows 95 works best but you might find otherwise). Use the icon to run FS2 from now on.

Since then it has appeared on Win2K a couple of times.
