New here... saying hi...good stuff and bad
i just started playing freespace 2 and after a few hrs ended up here. dont ask me how i knew there had to be a better engine but i just new!!! any way i'de like to say i absolutely love FS2 and the open source project. there are a few things i'de like to mention tho (and these are in no way attacks on any1 so please don't flame me)

first can any1 tell me why if i alt-tab out of the game and go to task manager my commit charge is over a gig? it swollows up my swap file AND i have 512MB of ram.

2nd some1 should please make an installer (post 3.6) even if it means updating it once a month or week because installing this and getting all the models and such is a pain in the arss, and i still dont know if i've gotten this right yet.

3rd: the tramendous loading times!!! i did search the forum and found something about the models files or something being the culprit. but i deleted this file and did not notice much difference. i do not believe it has anything to do with "calculating model stuff" as i have a 3ghz P4 (230Mhz FSB)

4th: why does opengl look like 16bit? (and  crap?)

5th: this one is NOT a gripe... i run the game with 8x AF and 6xT3 AA and it is spectacular (even if the env mapping is fubared on some ships) (yes i know it's bcause the models need updated or some such)

6th i would LOVE the inclusion of "unsupported" resolutions without the messed up target lead issue. as i can run it at 1600x1200 with these options ( -spec -glow -pcx32 -jpgtga -d3dmipmap -2d_poof -phreak -env -max_subdivide -decals -alpha_env -cache_ani -snd_preload) and 16xAF and 6xt3AA) and still manage good frame rate) and it is absolutely AMAZING!!!

7th. the studering wich i thought should be resolved with the -cache_ani and -snd_preload options, is to say the least distracting.

8th. if i messup the mission and am given the option to restart it thinks for awhile then CTD with no error msg. BIG"???"

that's all i can think of for now. so in general keep up the good work and if any1 knows why i have the issues i do then please reply. or just reply to say hi :)

btw i have a 9800se softmoded to 9800 pro OCed to (420/370) ((faster than XT :)))

OpenGL is 16-bit unless the build is compiled with DevIL support for loading hi-color images.  Otherwise it still uses the old 8-bit and 16-bit PCX files rather than the pretty TGA versions.  Not all builds are compiled with DevIL support, but if one is then it should include 3 DLLs (devil.dll, ilu.dll, ilut.dll) so it should be easy to tell.

I have an athlon 3000XP with a 400mhz bus, it can take 30 seconds to load the fenris, it's generateing index buffers, and it takes for freaking ever, we are planning on rebuilding the model format to have this pre generated.

Yay!  I get to do one!!

:welcome:

Welcome to the armpit of space, KyJelly.  Exits are at the left or right, depending on whether you're smart enough to distinguish between left and right.  If you see a Shivan, punch his lights out.  That's Carl, and he stole my lunch.  Bastard.  Flamethrowers are under the seats.  DO NOT USE THEM!  The high concentration of oxygen makes everything flammable, and he's a smartass, whoever decided to put flamethrowers under the seats...  What??  My "rambling" is pissing you off?  Get the hell out of here you damn useless excuse for a pilot!  GET LOST!!

Somehow, for some reason, that didnt sound very welcoming.  I'll try better next time. :blah:

EDIT:  Fixed some stuff up.
Bunny stole my signature :(.

Sorry boobies.

Here we go...

first can any1 tell me why if i alt-tab out of the game and go to task manager my commit charge is over a gig? it swollows up my swap file AND i have 512MB of ram.

Memory leak, known and being worked on.

Quote

Fractux is looking into making the installer able to get the most up-to-date files automatically.

3rd: the tramendous loading times!!! i did search the forum and found something about the models files or something being the culprit. but i deleted this file and did not notice much difference. i do not believe it has anything to do with "calculating model stuff" as i have a 3ghz P4 (230Mhz FSB)

If you have the high-poly fenris ANYWHERE in your directory tree (it is included in mv_models.vp) your loading times will shoot through the roof. I'm using a 1.6 Duron, and it takes a LONG time to load and convert to the new internal model format (This makes things run faster ingame)

Other than that, you can try removing the mediaVP files.

Quote
5th: this one is NOT a gripe... i run the game with 8x AF and 6xT3 AA and it is spectacular (even if the env mapping is fubared on some ships) (yes i know it's bcause the models need updated or some such)

:D Try the newest mediaVPs, LS's new shinemapped models take advantage of alpha-controlled environment mapping. (There's a commandline with the newest build to turn this on and off)

Quote
6th i would LOVE the inclusion of "unsupported" resolutions without the messed up target lead issue. as i can run it at 1600x1200 with these options ( -spec -glow -pcx32 -jpgtga -d3dmipmap -2d_poof -phreak -env -max_subdivide -decals -alpha_env -cache_ani -snd_preload) and 16xAF and 6xt3AA) and still manage good frame rate) and it is absolutely AMAZING!!!

This is becoming a more popular complaint, I did some looking into this but am not sure what's causing it yet.

Quote
7th. the studering wich i thought should be resolved with the -cache_ani and -snd_preload options, is to say the least distracting.

Some other people have complained about this, it's probably a good idea to mantis it.

Quote
8th. if i messup the mission and am given the option to restart it thinks for awhile then CTD with no error msg. BIG"???"

Sounds like a memory leak problem.

1. Do you have mv_models_a.vp?

2. Are you actually running a mission with a Fenris or Leviathan in it?

If the answer to either is no that's why your load times are good.

not even sure where to start...

first to vyper: thanks ;)

second to WMCoolmon:

1. that's a HUGE memory leak, shouldn't be too hard to find.

2. go fractux go!!! hurry up brotha

3. maybe some1 could make a model.vp pack without the model type that needs conversion.

5. i believe i am using LS's new shinemap models. not sure if i'm using the right command line option or if they are in the right directory tho, -alpha_env perhaps?

6th. maybe a conversion matrix to upsample the lead indicators coordinants (sound smart don't i?)

7. mantis?

8. see #1

It's a needle in a haystack asfar as memory leaks go. It's freed when Freespace 2 closes, but only gets worse during gameplay and between level loads. Most bug trackers only track memory left after the program has quit

Being worked on, the file format doesn't exist.

Yep

Well the odd thing is that while the lead indicator and text are in the wrong place, the target box still seems to work fine - I've tried to change all the resolution-specific data too with no luck. :wtf:
