I really didin't want to post another 'help me!' thread but I'm in a bind. I've UV'd a mesh after much struggle but now I'm stuck trying to do a decent texture job.

I'm reduced to using V tiles so can anyone offer any wisdom regarding decent combinations (ie, which tiles look best wuth which)

I'm asking this purely from an artistic POV, not technically. Piccys to follow of the mesh if requested (it's been on here before though)

Don't mix brown and grey tiles. That's probaly the worst thing you can do. Try not to mix diferent tiles too much, use on texture as 'main tile', like the Deimos for example, where most of the ship is covered by just one texture(Why would y ship beeing covered by 10 different looking armor plate types? this just makes the ship look like a collection of repairs which is ready to fall apart).

Try to use a texture where the lines between the armor plates aren't too obvious, like the tiling texture on the Deimos corvette for example, because if you could see the spaces between the armor plates from a mile away I think that ship would be in real trouble.

Don't overdo the tiling. Rather choose a low tiling where the texture looks a bit more blurred but less repetive, because most of the time you won't skim the ships surface and it looks better than having the texture repeated a hundred times over the ship just to make it look sharp at close.

The Deimos/Charybdis textures work pretty well with one another, and you can actually get them on decently without having stripes across your ships (oh :V:, why oh why do those maps not tile vertically?).  The Aeolus textures can work in fairly well there too.
who needs a signature? ;)
It's not much of an excuse for a website, but my stuff can be found here

That's actually what I've been trying. AWACtil1 and Cvettetile1 IIRC. It looked too grey though. Do you chaps reckon that may be more to do with the TS renderer. and less noticeable ingame ?

Generally, textures look good as they were applied on V ships, after all they were made to go together. At most, only use 2 different colors. Grey and green usually work. Silverish and blue. Nothing works with Orion maps, mind you... those are fugly.
