It's unlikely at the moment. We have a few issues with vBulletin, sadly.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

It's TWO  years old.

Released May 27th 2002.

There have been countless database, feature, and speed enhancements since then.

Thank you.

It gets worse with each release. UBB was fine and simple then once vbb3 came out, it turns into something AOL would support.
I finally destoryed the Shivan armada and all I got was this lousy T shirt.

Oh, so because there's newer versions available, we should, of course, upgrade...

:wtf:

Sandwich: i don't know. that may be a concept you're not familiar with.  but with me, if something's working right, at least to the outsider, then i don't see a reason to change it.  sure you guys may be having problems behind the scenes, but i assure you that to all us regular users it seems to be working fine :)  and if you upgrade to a newer vBulletin, i'm pretty sure you'll have more problems than you have now ;)

Stealth, your sentiment is well received, but it's quite clear that not all regular users have it fine. There is a plethora of problems that users are coming up with all the time. Aside from that, as mentioned earlier, it's unlike we will upgrade to a newer vB.

Are the problems you admins are referring to the frequent "Cannot Access the Database" MySQL stuff? I thought that was at gamespys end?

Yeah, the MySQL errors are firmly a GS problem. Access problems are more the norm, but really all manner of stuff can go wrong.

Yeah, I think the MySQL server shares power with the GS Board of Directors' coffee machines. :doubt:

I'm bump-replying to this, because I want things to be clear - you guys deserve to know.

HLP has been having fairly major MySQL (database) problems over the past few months. If you've gotten those "Connection to server timed out" or "Too many connections" MySQL errors, that's what I'm referring to. Such errors are firmly on GameSpy's side of things - it would not matter what forum package we used (except UBB, of course, which doesn't USE a MySQL database).

The problems Setekh and I were talking about are more behind the scenes, hidden from the eyes of most of you all. Primarily, we've had an absolute ton of access mask issues - people being able to view private forums without being assigned access. To make matters worse, these issues (AFAIK) cannot be resolved via the vB control panel - according to the CP, the user access mask is generally set correctly. We've had to delve directly into the database to solve these issues.

We've also had certain isolated instances of user accounts disappearing, although this could be attributable to database corruption from the frequent server crashes.

And, to top things off, there's a bunch of stuff the staff would like to do with the forums and site, that is simply too hard to be worth it using the current forum.

So yeah, we're definitely looking into other options, both for pay (vb3) and free (IPB, phpBB). Whatever we decide on, you can be sure that it will be an improvement, even if it does take some getting used to. After all, even when you start to wear a new pair of shoes, you still tie those laces the same way. That's what we're aiming for - New Shoes for a Better HLP. ;) :p
