What are your opinions of way music influences the way we feel?
Well, I'm curious...

What do you think the effects and influence of music on the human mind?

Mine:

1.  there are two kinds of people, music wise.  First, you just listen because it relaxes you, ect. Second, It means more to you (i.e. I won't listen to gothic because it just doesn't support what I believe...

To me, I'm the Second kind of person

2.  Music creates a Hypnotic state of mind, it can make you feel a certain way about things.

What are your views of Music on the Human Mind?

To me, it gives a different perspective on life. It also depends on what im listening to. If im listening to something from RA2 - its going to give me a different perspective on my surroundings, as I moved and walked through people and things.....

I feel that songs tell a story, and not just lyrically.

Number 2, although loud music can be a way to let out feelings (when I'm pissed I listen to Slayer or Nile, sometimes Nightwish helps with certain moods, classical, etc.)

Yes that's interresting, how when (i.e. depression can better be dealt with when you listen to heavy rock kind of music.)

A bit of both for me. What I listen to depends on what sort of mood I'm in, but then my mood can change as a result of what I'm listening to...

I mean, I can get completely different effects from the same album - for example Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden. It's one of my favourite albums, because it's got pretty much everything I look for in rock music. It's heavy and melodic at the same time, so I can listen to it to relax, or listen to it to get charged up, depending on what I want to feel. The same can be applied to Nightwish, and even Metallica's black album.

Then there's the meaningful music with a message (rather than metal, which is ultimately rather silly in terms of content - it's all about war, death, adventure, etc., not really grounded in reality). E.g. RATM or SOAD - their music is more about the lyrical content than the riffs (though they are rather good ;)), so I'd listen to that if I was feeling angry about something, or a bit downtrodden or whatever.

Then there's classical music, which is far too complex to just have as a background - you need to actively listen to it to get the full effect.

:)

Though that's a valid distinction to make, I think there are more than two types of people when it comes to music. :)
- Eddie Kent Woo, Setekh, Steak (of Steaks), AWACS. Seriously, just pick one.

Music is supposed to express an idea, an emotion, a story, etc...

I like to listen to it because I'm curious :nervous:

Music to me means nothing if i cant relate to it. I dont beleive Music has as much an influence as the rest of media unless you can relate to the song.

I dont beleive music makes you do crazy things, but coupled with gaming and television, the media blitz tends to wear on the soul if you know what i mean.

Music should be able to make you feel 'up' or 'down'.  Or rather, good music does.

So 2 would be the closest.

Good music has atmosphere, and anticipation, created by change in tone.  I generally like songs that start of quiet and end louder, it builds a lot of feeling through the song towards the climax.  Infact it doesnt even need to finish louder, it just needs louder and quieter bits to change the tone.  The beauty is in thinking about your favourite bit of a song, and waiting for it.  If you heard it on its own its not the same.
Consequently the usual pop formula of verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus doesnt do much for me.
As far as lyrics go, i don't find them too important.  But if someone was singing something stupid that didn't fit the song I'd notice.
Bands like SOAD, RATM and Faithless do make me think a bit though, they have a message in what they say.

"Your cynicism appauls me Collosus - I have ten thousand officers and crew willing to die for pants !"

"Go to red alert!"
"Are you sure sir? It does mean changing the bulb"

i really dont know what kinda person i am, and i do think thet there are more that just two options.

i like deep lyrics, fast drums, thrashing guitars and symphonic masterpices. so primarily i listen to black metal (like gothinc bur far more intence) but i have a wide range of musical tastes. take dimmu borgir's unorthadox manifesto,  after about a minute and a half of listining to ww2 fighter airplanes, browning .50 cal machine guns, and a marching army that keeps chanting "hail satan" and after "gentelmen.... DESTROY!" the song starts of with blazing metal fury, and gradualy slows down to a gentle piano solo at the end. sometimes i will focus onto the lyrics or on a particular instrament. i will try to follow the rythmic patters of the drums or focus on the words (in all their demonic fury). i wil disect a great many of my favorate songs in that maner. often i find very subtle things that add alot to the meaning of the song. the general flow of a song has alot of meaning.

i often read between the lines because aften a song's meaning is in great conflict with the actual lyrics. take gwar for example, if you took em literaly it would probibly want to make you go out and have intercourse with a farm animal or consume the entrails of one of your relatives. when infact they are trying to reveal the true nature of man. by associating evil tendancies with vile characters they mean to say that there are monsrters among us.

often a song doesnt try to say a whole lot but is still fun to listen to. so i will listen to alot of instumental stuff. metallica's the call of ktulu is an awesome example of instrumental flow. if you listen closely you can tell that there is a story there. however abstract it might be. same aplies to any classicl work.

im more an instrumental type so if a song doesnt sound good from that perspective i probibly wouldnt listen to it. being into alot of death/black metal i often wont even try to listen to the lyrics at first, focusing on the melody. because of the demonic nature of the way lyrics are done in that particlular kind of music il actually have look up the lyrics before i have any clue as to what they are saying. foreng language music is about the same. i didnt even care what rammstein said because they knew how to play their instruments. but on ocasion i will figure out what the song is about without even looking up the lyrics.

i do give lyrical band such as ratm some credit, bands who are about making the world a beter place yet get crapped on by politicians always deserve credit. even gwar does it too but not in an obvious way and not to the same degree. some black metal bands (dimmu borgir in particular) can be very wordy. and i swear my vocabulary has doubled sence i started listening to them. being abstract minded i will always look beont what is said. because theres always alot more to it.
I can no longer sit back and allow communist infiltration, communist indoctrination, communist subversion, and the international communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

If you must know, when I listen to a song I create a movie in my head. I picture a scene with that particular song in it. For instance,

http://swooh.com/peon/tincan/Music/09%20Track%209.wma

I hosted this song from Mechwarrior 2 on my webspace. When I listen to it, I picture a planet prepped for an ariel attack, and awaiting the enemy fleet. When the tempo picks up at around 1:10 I picture the fleet coming down from the clouds, luminous and frightening, and the music after that the "silent battle"

For this one:

http://swooh.com/peon/tincan/Music/KR-Hyperblast-Redux.mp3

Hyperblast Redux from UT2K4 (also in my sig) I picture a faced paced either:

A) Scene of escape from one guy escaping from a group of heavily armed men in black armor.

B) A Freespace 2 battle between a heavily packed assault fleet attacking a destroyer and its enormous fighter escort. I actually plan to use that song in my level 5 for the campaign im making! ;7

You see that's my point I made in that I'm the second type of person:

I don't like it because, music is meaningful to me and I don't want to listen to people screaming and cursing at my God
