I recently installed 3.6 with the EXE (not the zip) and I did not see any changes in graphics and effects. I was wondering if this was because the media vps did not come with the exe.

Also, in launcher 5 it says that once you run the launcher once you will not have to run the launcher. This is not the case with me. everytime i click on my fs2_open shortcut the launcher pops up.

A little thing that probably is not a big deal is that when i press run on the launcher a screen pops up that says Freespace 2: SCP 3.5.6. But after a few seconds i select my pilot and get to the main menu and in the corner it says V3.6.

All of these things are kind of confusing me so if anyone here has answers to them that would be appreciated. Thanks

There is a larger version of the installer, which has the media VP stuff.  You also need the correct flags in the launcher.  You should look through the Wiki to learn which flags do what, to avoid activating flags that slow you down unnecessarily.

Make sure that your FSO shortcut heads to the fs2_Open_3_6.exe file, and not to launcher.exe.  You may also want to investigate newer builds, especially if you plan on playing on Very Easy, or want to play with the new ultra-cool experimental effects.

If you're using the new media VPs, make sure that you remove or deactivate any older media VPs, as it sounds like you've got the old 3.5.6 VP, or the splash screen file extracted somewhere.

You don't have to use the launcher but I'd advise you to do so anyway. The launcher makes it easy to swap mods so you can play the main campaign one day and swap to Inferno the next.

It also makes things easier when you swap builds as all you have to do is pick one from a list. Otherwise you have to move/delete the old build and rename the new one to whatever you used for the old one.
