This has got to be THE most cumbersome, inneffiant, and knuckle-brained scheme ever. Apparantly, if you want a free trial of the game, you have to BUY it first. Right.
Anyway, there is another opportunity: the buddy system. I was hoping someone here at HLP who plays this game could help me/anyone else who wants a trial out?

EvE: BORING AS HELL.

This is basically the jist of the game:

Money, gaining skills, extremely badly designed ships, mindnumbingly dull combat, no backstory in-game.

Thats basically the game. :ick: Fun for 3 days but then... no more.

Um.. you can download the game from the site for free. Send me your e-mail and I'll set you up...

And Tiara, I'd agree, but EVE expands into something greater and more exciting over an extended period, so I guess those with no patience never get to see that.

The only thing that has expanded since the beta I was in, is that you can visit more and more systems. Which all happen to be extremely similar.

Each system is this: Stations, planets and asteroids.

And the planets don't even serve a purpose. Hell, you can litterally fly right through them. The same fly-through issue is there with stations.

Seriously, not much has 'expanded' as you say over the past few YEARS in this game. Maybe a few pirates were added and a few new NPC corporations, but thats really just not enough.

I wasn't talking about the expansion of the environment. I'm talking about expansion of the mind, and experience. Theres nothing like the sound of your heart in your headphones as you travel through the unpatrolled regions, flinching at every passer by that might bring your special, labour of love ship to it's doom.

Also, there is a LOT more than Planets, Asteroids and Stations. There are nebulas, hideouts, outposts, wrecks, abandoned facilities, lots of freaky "eye candy" objects - And you can do a LOT more than mine in the game, you can choose your own path. Missions, Trading, Hunting NPC, Hunting Players, Become a pirate.. etc. There is a lot of boring ****, and there is some thrills to be had. I didn't think I would like EVE, the Beta was ok, despite not playing much. It's changed a lot, and CCP have worked hard to balance out the game. And, Shiva, the first "proper" expansion for EVE will be out this year, which will truely EXPAND the environment.

And that gets dull after a few days you know. Because there is virtually no variation.

Yet, what you all said, is mindnumbingly dull after you've seen it once. When you've seen one, you've seen them all.

And as you also said, there's a lot of boring ****. In a good game there isn't 'a lot of boring ****'. Sure, it can't be as exciting, but if even combat is merely orbiting your opponent at several clicks, turn on your weapon and occaissionally change course, then I find it hard to get myself to play it again.

Also, the only thing combat relies on is equipment, type of ship and skills. Tactics and strategic manoeuvering are no longer an issue in this game.

That too :p You need to play at least 2 months if you even want to be able to compete on the lowest levels.

That mean $40 of the dullest game ever before you even get some good action.

Well, I suppose it's all down to personal taste. Some people like games where you have to work hard to be a factor. Elite was a great example of this, your little Cobra at the off is pretty much no match for a pirate ship, you have to do a lot of trading etc before you can really do anything other than run like hell for the station if you're outnumbered.

Sometimes it's nice to take a break from games like 'Ground Control' where you're trying to keep your brain focussed on 7 units in different places at the same time ;)

It's simple really.

Boils down to who likes action and effectivness and who likes something to entertain them on a regular basis, making a habit out of it.

I mean, I like FreeSpace and 3d first person shooters, and other fast paced games, but after two straight hours of non-stop killing, I want to stick a knife through my ear, just to check if my brain works. Games like EvE fail to keep my attention, because I find them boring, and they actually ASK A LOT of my time in order for me to be even mediocre-ly effective.

FS2 just puts you in there, and you either have it or you don't. That simple.

Not really, for example... take a classic japanese RPG like Final Fantasy. Whether you succeed or not it all comes down to skills and levelling up. I have no problem with that as long as there is at least a focus to the game. That is something EvE lacks completely.

Its better then a brainless FPS, but still.

Well, one good thing about EVE is that it's something you can play in almost any state of mind. If I'm tired, and don't feel like stressing in a game of say, Jedi Academy or Descent, then I'll just play EVE. I can load up my custom playlist, and chillout to some music while playing around. It's one of those "chillout" games, ofcourse, when you encounter a bad person, it gets VERY nerve wrecking :P I have to agree with Tiara "once you've seen it, you've seen it all" factor. There is a real lacking element in exploration .When I first went out into "the deep" vast empty regions, it was exciting. The sense of exploration was there. But after a while it died, and a little fast at that. BUT, I'm sticking around because Shiva promises to have a LOT more things to check out, and hopefully it will introduce a little more interesting strategy with the player structures.

I have to agree with Tiara. ...a game needs to hook you onto it and never let go. It needs to be attractive throughout the play.

"It becomes rewarding" doesn't cut it. It needs to be rewarding from the start.

I agree, no one is more confined to "Rewarding" games than me, but something held me in the game, so it must be doing something right. But to each their own, circumstances, perspective, and so forth :)
