I just wrote the most innovative sci-fi plot ever. Fear me.

- We have a interstellar human federation
- MEET: CIVIL WAR
- while battling some other weird guys of course
- hey, let's make this war a really prolonged and stupid!
- Meet: The Omnipotent Black Destroyers from Beyond Space and Time who are xenophobic, how original!
- ZOMG
- let humans, humans and aliens unite forces!
- Let's fight!
- oh noes, more civil war and half-assed rambling about prophecies!
- The Omnipotent Black Destroyers from Beyond Space and Time threat the future of the Earth!
- DEFEND EARTH
- win the Omnipotent Black Destroyers from Beyond Space and Time in one hectic anticlimatic (because game engine/movie budget didn't allow for some spectacular showdown), but lose Earth!
- feck
- well, prepare for sequels with even more Omnipotent Black Destroyers.
- more civil war in Human Federation.
- repeat, profit

Come to think of it, the main plot in FS saga was not that original.
lol wtf

Is this an actual game, not a very big mod? I think that I saw the screenshots of the levels made in Jedi Outcast.

Well, at least we've found the spiritual home for the GTD Cube.

EDIT; what do you think would take longer - the model or the concept art?

It seems woefully underarmed for a Destroyer.

Maybe in this universe, space combat works more like real naval combat, where each hit from a single gun inflicts massive damage.

Site is down for me.

To be honest, Freespace 1 was probably the one that set the computer game 'standard' of a 'third race' that appears during a war. I could of course be wrong ;)

Perhaps, but certainly not the idea of a super-powerful, unstoppable invader that ravages everything and pushes humanity back to its doorstep.

Well, the 'last stand' is a very very classic storytelling tool from as far back as humanities records go. The tale of Achilles is a good example. Or Olympus against the Titans, it's good dramatic stuff ;)

In fact, Lord of the Rings is an excellent example as well ;)

Indeed. And the classic sci-fi example would undoubtedly be the Borg.

Anyway, I think more game developers should take a hint from Tachyon: The Fringe. There was a kickass sci-fi flight sim with no Alien Invader of Death.

Tachyon - or more specifically, Bruce Campbells' voiceovers - annoyed the tits off me.

You mean you didn't enjoy hours of "I gotta hold this bucket o' bolts together," or "Hey, I think I hear your momma callin'"?
