Retexturing the skybox?
Hi there!

I've got a new question, does anyone know, how to retexture the Skybox in Freespace? Doing it with FRED would take days, I think....

Any options?

And my second question, any possibilitys of modding the subspace???

THX!

A skybox is basically just a textured model that's rendered behind everything else and always centered on the camera, so all you have to do is change the maps on the skybox's POF file. If you want to know how to make the maps, that depends on which program you plan to use - if it's a 3D modeler/renderer, you just set up a scene, place six cameras, all centered on the exact same spot and rotated 90 degrees from each other (one in each direction, of course), set their field of view to 90 degrees and render each of them to a square resolution (say, 512x512).

As for the subspace, yeah, you can mod that. The original subspace effect uses two POF files. I just don't remember their names. Just change them (point to new maps, make a new POF, etc.).
Probably away. Contact through email.

just use lithunwrap and create your own skybox, it's pretty elementar and it could be a first step into the modelling creation.
you'll need lithunwrap and truespace+pcs (or 3dsmax+ stixx's plugin)
in Lithunwrap create a sphere and choose the detail level (IIRC around 200 triangles/100 faces should be ok)
unwrap the sphere. This depend by what you exactly want to do.
If you want a single texture all over the skybox then you'd need using a spherical uvmap, but to keep proportions you'll need to repeat twice the texture or to use a texture with one side twice of the other one.
Or, you could use many textures and a cubic uvmap....there are many solutions and it all depends by you and the result you want to obtain.
Save as .cob, open in truespace, flip the faces(IIRC you can do that in lithunwrap too), glue a light to the sphere, resave, use PCS to convert to .pof.
