Descent and FreeSpace
So, what exactly IS the relationship between Descent and FreeSpace? Was it merely the name or was it more?

The company that developed Descent and Descent ][ was called Parallax. This company later split into two seperate companies: Outrage, which created Descent 3, and Volition, which created Freespace, Red Faction, Summoner, and their sequels.

So Descent: Freespace is essentially saying 'An open-space combat sim from the creators of Descent.' There's lots in common between them, as far as coding and rendering methods go, and there's lots of similarities in the fancy explosions with lots of debris and innovative re-working of the same engine to create a sequel.

Ah, thanks for clearing this up for me. I remember when I got FS1 and was trying to find the connection between the two games.

Actually the "Descent" part of Freespace was to resolve a trademark conflict with a disk utility called "Freespace".  Descent: Freespace cleared that up, though there never really was any plot connection between the series.

It's not much of an excuse for a website, but my stuff can be found here

It was called Conflict:Freespace in the UK (and presumably europe), so it smells strongly of marketing to me.  Possibly something to do with including an advert for Descent 3 on the disk........
