I don't wanna sound like an idiot, but how do I actually use these ? I'm using open build 3.6 and (for now) FRED3.5.5 with all media downloads but the background editior in FRED doesn't appear to have any new entries.

I think you have to use notepad for now.
And Fred is majorly SCREWED UP to put it mildly.

no 3.5.5 is okay. When you say notepad, do you mean table entries ?

FRED3.5.5 doesn't support the nebulae. You'll have to use a newer version of FRED.

See if you can find fred2_open_c04282004. That one's pretty reliable and has the new stars.tbl code in it.

The problem is that FS2 only supported a small number of entries in stars.tbl, and any further entries were ignored. Same with FRED, of course.

Still FRED inside the repository is really goofy right now.

Works for me, and has the new stars.tbl code in it. Briefing icons and waypoints are slightly messed up, but the rest works flawlessly (and you CAN do briefing and waypoints with it, if you know how).

Okay I got that build and it looks cool, but I still don't know how I specify a background image to a mission. Only retail stuff appears in the b/ground editor.

Another question (this ain't stupid though. I think)

Release6 table mentions Nebulas A through to F but I've only got A and F files. Unless I chop the table I got warnings. Should I have all the extra files (ie; B to E)

I've got 3.6 Open vp.files core, zpack and kpack BTW
(the media links in the unoffical release thread all appear to be outdated)

Download all the nebula files extract them into the apropiate directory and use the stars.tbl file in the last nebula pack.
