JERUSALEM - A group of prominent Israeli hard-liners urged soldiers Thursday to disobey orders to dismantle Jewish settlements, widening the bitter divisions over Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank.



It seems extremists absolutely everywhere have decided to rise up and be a pain in the arse.

When you're bulldozing their homes and they retaliate, it's not terrorism.

They're not trying to 'instill terror' but to 'settle the score'. So at best it's vandalism and at worst vigilantism.

As for Sharon, you're only a hard-liner as long as you're actually performing hard-line actions.

Like if Hitler had suddenly converted to Communism he wouldn't be a Facist Dictator, he'd be a Communist Dictator.

Terrorism is reciprocal, it seems.  

One side blows up a bus, the other sends a tank into a refugee camp.  And so forth, on and on and on until the only thing the 2 sides know is to blame the other side for everything.

Oh, and being a 'hard-liner' is characteristed by an unwillingness to compromise even for the sake of (potential) peace, or even a step towards that.  

It would seem that any step which could lead towards a non-violent solution is considered as 'surrendering' or 'capitulating' to terrorists.  Even one as seemingly ineffectual as this disengagement plan.

Compromise is a dirty word, I guess.

Well, the man's allowed to change, if he makes policies that are less hard line than normal, I will see that as a hopeful sign. The fact that his own creation is turning against him is not entirely unexpected, but unfortunate

Yes, but then you get jittery border guards, and a Palestinian kid gets shot by accident, and then someone retaliates for that, so in retaliation for that retaliation they bulldoze another house.....

The Jews unilaterally decided that the formation of Israel was a good idea and land-grabbed from the Palestinians.

No, Sharon (and Likud) is no less of a hardliner, but there are always bigger extremists. Just like Bush is a hardliner, but there are still people on the right who claim that he is not agressive enough.

and I STILL don't understand how the "disengamenet plan" is a concession to the Palestinians, when in exchange for the Gaza withdrawl, a larger portion of the West Bank is being taken, which is not only greater in quantity but also in quality.

But apparently, some people think that giving anything is appeasement, even if you take more in return.
