For instance, many of you will probably think I'm mad/stupid/dead when I say I thought Unreal 2 was infinitely better than Halo. Although I will admit that Halo is quite a bit better than the abomination that was Far Cry.

With that out of the way, I'll probably look into Halo 2 if it ever comes out on PC, although I'm not really concerned whether it does or not. I just hate console FPSes (controls are too damn sluggish) so I won't even bother with the Xbox version. I'd sooner play Far Cry than buy an Xbox.

Not that I hate Xbox, I just haven't seen any games that really interest me. It's the same with all the other consoles, with the exception of PS1 which has the first Silent Hill.

to note, halo's handling of vehicles was -perfect- i mean, you didn't handle the vehicles directly, you gestured at the direction, definitely a plus.. halo's multi.. was fun.. i mean, do you know of any other CTF that lets you kill people with a good square hit with the flag?:p

i found that far-cry's vehicles were.. "tacked on" you simply needed them to get to point a to point b, not nearly something of a tactical advantage later on into that game.

that said, it'd be really cool if bungie put some resources into "Oni 2" ;)

now, as for abominations.. "FireWarrior" comes to mind.. ;)
"Breed" also..

I sincerely believe that it is impossible to not like the game :)

I was indecisive as to whether to get it yesterday, then I spent a few minutes re-reading all the reviews, and rushed out to get it. I got there just as the shop was closing and managed to get one of the last three copies, best thing was that I traded in a few very old games and only had to pay an entire £1 for it.

*Shudders at mention of Firewarrior*

I started playing that game on PC with the lowest possible expectations, knowing it was crap.
Yet it still managed to dissapoint beyond belief!
How can that attrocity ever got the go ahead to go Gold is beyond me.

Someone I know, said they'd heard 'Breed' was a Halo killer. I choked on my drink and had to take 20 seconds to recover before correcting them politly, telling them to burn it on sight while screaming to the villagers to take cover.

But all companies have there ups and downs (or in Firewarrior's case just plane out crap with not a smidget of fun in it).
Hopefully they take it as a lesson, and take an oath with a hand on whatever God / thing they worship and promise to never make a game as horrid as that again...

EDIT: bin - sounds good. I don't have any older games to trade in though, I usually only buy the proven games. But by the sounds of things, the money I will have to pay for it will be worth every cent :D

Breed was a pity, it never turned out the way it was supposed to, it had huge potential but I don't think they had the money or the manpower to pull it off really. Not really a Halo clone though, they were both conceived at roughly the same time. Dire voice acting though.

Well I'll admit Halo's vehicles were well done. Although that hardly makes it a good game.

Grug, I happen to think Far Cry is that bad. It was an overpriced tech demo, like Doom 3, except Doom 3 was actually fun. It even had a story.

01010: How interesting. You like Halo and Far Cry and hate Unreal 2. I, on the other hand, hate Halo and Far Cry and like Unreal 2. Thus, I have poor taste simply because my opinions are not the same as yours. I think the problem is, I play games mostly for story. If I don't like the story, I'm going to get bored of the game pretty quickly. Far Cry and Halo had quite uninspired stories (I thought), while I enjoyed Unreal 2's story. There are plenty of other games I liked where others hated, this goes for practically anything like movies and books, so I'm plenty used to being told I have poor taste.

Ninja Gaiden is pretty awesome on the Xbox. My brother and I just finished it, 30 hours all through.

lol Turnsky.

Ransom Arceihn - I'm sure mr binary was just tagging a joke on to spice things up a bit.

Well I own Doom3, and I wouldn't say that Doom3's story was all that great either... Plus it has repetitive gameplay however spooky and well scripted they are.

I for one, am one which loves a good story. Try reading some of the Halo books they add a lot more depth to the Halo story.

I might ask if you've played Homeworld (1 that is).
I thought that it had a great story, even though its gameplay was a little shorthanded at times. I loved that game for its plot and emotion.
Tis also why I felt dissapointed at Homeworld 2.
For the lack of good story telling... :(

I don't hate Unreal 2, it just wasn't fun, the story was generic and the weapons and enemies were fairly uninspired. I'm not alone in this by the way. You check out the average U2 review compared to the average Halo review or the average Far Cry review and you'll see the difference. Halo has a great backstory and there is a lot more going on in the game than what is handed to you in the cutscenes, a lot of the story development is in the architecture of the buildings, the design of the levels, read the books, check out the halo.bungie.org story discussion site and see how rich the Halo universe storyline is. I do agree that Far Cry's story was wank though, but the game was excellent, how do you see it as a glorified tech demo?

Also, as Grug said above, the poor taste remark was a bit of gentle ribbing, no hard feelings eh? ;)

I knew, I wasn't the only one who thought that. IMO, the utter and complete lack of story in Far Cry made it very often very repetive, because of the similarity of enemies, and environments. I admit, I never finished the game. Got too bored of it.

Halo PC was not a failure. Halo PC has better graphics that H-XB. If your cad does not support the graphics, that is not a problem with the game. It is a problem with graphics. I get full functionality out of it with a radeon 9700. The Xbox uses a modified GF2. The GF4 is superior to the Xbox version of the GF2. The box clearly states the requirements for the game, and if you can't meet them, you can't expect it to run.

My PC vastly exceeds the requirements for Halo, and it barely runs at lowest res with everything turned off (and it wasn;t all that pretty a game to start off with).  Slowdown makes it unplayable at points, especially with the flood. It's a botch job, pure & simple - otherwise why would Gearbox have released a CE version to try and get over it?

NB: Burnout 3 kicks arse.  It's quite simply completely nucking futs :D

I would add Full Spectrum Warrior to the "Reasons to buy an XBox" list. Ninja Gaiden was good but the bosses were just a pain in the ass, especially as there was usually no warning of their arrival. (even though being the only one to be able to kill the Chopper earned me some short lived respect from my peers!)

FSW is on the PC, though (think it recently went gold)...... I'd venture that you can only buy consoles for a game if that game is exclusive (at least for a certain period of time) - i.e. Metriod on Gamecube, GTA on PS2, Halo on X-box, etc.

Other good games on Xbox include Rallisport 2, that game is pure enjoyment. I really can't get bored of watching my car fall apart as I take it over a cliff side.

I got a console mainly because:
A: Its cheaper then buying a new computer to run all of the newest games.
B: Its portable.
C: Split screen play is fun as heck, especially when you have 4 xbox's linked. (BTW, I read somewhere that you could link like, 6 xbox's for Halo 2, this true?)
D: Co-op is incredible on Halo, first night I got my xbox I spent 5 hours playing co-op up to 343 Guilty Spark. By that time it was night, and I was getting reeeaallly creeped out.
E: HDTV support. I like having a huge screen.
F: Bean bag support. I can sit on a bean bag and play all day.

General disagreements on U2 aside, I know that Halo and Far Cry got good reviews, and that U2 got bad ones. I'm not really sure how this is relevant though, since obviously I disagree (I disagree with a lot of reviews as you may have guessed by now :p). About the story, though, I like stories based on how much I enjoy them, so whether U2's story was generic or not doesn't make much difference.

Halo, well, I'm sure the story is incredibly deep and complicated if you read the books and so on. But I'm not talking about the story on its own, I'm talking about the story in the game. And what was in the game wasn't that good. I did enjoy the cutscenes though, but the huge gaps between them with monotonous shooting of about 5 different types of enemies through repetitive levels took away any effect in my opinion.

Now Far Cry, there's another reason why I don't like it. It's too damn realistic - not gameplay terms, but in the setting. Weapons, armies of mercs, vehicles, I just don't like realistic stuff. This is the same reason why I don't like Counter Strike. The setting just fails to excite me.

@ Grug: I know Doom 3's story isn't all that complicated, but it's certainly more complicated than Far Cry's, and the difference is that I enjoyed D3's story a hell of a lot more. Yes, I've played Homeworld; damn excellent game. Haven't finished Homeworld 2 yet, but so far the story does look worse. Have you played Cataclysm?

  • From the ashes...
Yeah I've played Cataclysm, it was alright too I guess, but I'll still stand by Homeworld 1 as being the best of the series story wise...
Cataclysm is the only one I don't own, mainly for the reason it doesn't work with XP and my computer for some reason. :(
I won't spoil the ending of Homeworld2 for you, but there are just some stupid things that they tell you about, which gives you the impression your supposed to know but have heard no mention of it in previous games...
But again, Homeworld2 was deadlined by publishers, so its a pity they didn't have time to get the story on at least a par to Homeworld1. :(

I don't really like Counter Strike either, its probably more repetitive as the circumference of a circle. :p

I enjoyed the story in Halo the game, it was afterwards I read some of the books and backstory...
On a side note, one of the big upgrades in Halo2 is the cinematics, they said there is no comparison between the slap together ones in Halo1 to the theatrical cinematics in Halo2.
Here's hoping it turns out to be true! :D
