Suddenly, my game "stutters," whenever I look at stuff. I thought it might be my ATI Radeon 9800, but when I (temporarily, as my love for SCP will never wither) uninstalled SCP, it worked fine.

My Sys specs:

Pentium 4
2.4 GHZ
About 55 gigs free total (12 gigs free on Fs2's drive)
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
512 MB of RAM

EDIT: Just when SCP was working so well...WHY?! WHY, CRUEL WORLD!?!

Make sure there are no proggies running in the background, and all that.  Also, you're not using LS's high res animated glowmaps, are you? Go to the low res ones. Supposedly they look equally good. I Haven't tried them yet, but I believe LS.

Secondly... someone else'll be along shortly to offer this suggestion...

Actually...I was using them. Let me try turning them off.

EDIT TWO: Actually, I was never using them. I only thought I was.
So...never mind.

If it only jerks when you look at new stuff, it's the texture loads most likely. I feel it very strongly since I run my Ti4200 at AGP 1x.

It's annoying that the game can't pre-load all the textures into video RAM (Then again I don't know how big the textures are. It's very likely it'd need more than 128MB...)

Say, I wonder how long before cards have so much on-board RAM we can buy real-time raytracing cards...? :D

Um...yeah...thanks Cyker.

Some good points...but not very helpful.

I'M DOOMED!

Luckily, I have a contigency plan (toss $200 graphics card out window and dig out old one).

The old one runs at 30 FPS max with all features off, so I would rather find out what the heck is wrong with my good ol' SCP here.

EDIT: SAVE ME!

Don't chuck the card... try a different build...

or, (obvious, yes, but) have you tried rebooting?

Tried rebooting, reinstalling, everything.

Luckily, it works now, kinda. little. It still stutters a little, but it is playable now. I tried your suggestion and disabled everything in the background (found a few things that didn't appear in the task monitor, but were still there. Is that even possible?!), set AGP to x4, and reinstalled SCP again.

It now operates at acceptable levels, but slows down slightly when new ships jump in, Ani files play, and when the level first begins.

Other than that, it works...okay.

I wonder if, with the hyper-advanced card I have, I can improve performance someway. Any tips?

EDIT: Thanks Raa, for helping me...at least it works now. Thanks Cyker, for...uh...posting at all. A lot of people just view and leave.

what flags are you using in the launcher?  and also what builds have you tried.  You might want to try the preload mission sounds flag if your not using it, that one fixed a crash problem for me once.  And of corse disabling the shine/glow maps will improve preformance.   also can you tell me what FPS your geting?  The more I know, the more I can help.

Mad? Oh yes quite mad.

turn off -PCX32, it doesn't do much for quality and eats performance like M&Ms.

I'm using -glow and -jpgtga

Jpgtga so I can use Lightspeed's AWESOME engine effects

Glow just because the ships look better with it on

EDIT: Also, I can only play two missions at a time due to the fact that I run out of RAM. I have 512 MB of it, so something is eating it up really fast.

As soon as I start a mission, it says I have only, like, 90 MB left. I don't have any programs running in the background.

Hold up what build are you using?  The memory leak was fixed a while ago.

You should be using the build in this thread. Bear in mind it will change your pilot files so that previous versions won't recognize them, but this build is fast!  I get consistent 30-35 Fps on a Mobility Radeon with -glow and -shine both on.

I'll use that one ASAP.

Sheesh, what would I do without you people? This forum is a lot more helpful than the HW one I used to go to.

Thanks!

That's because most HW forums are filled with a bunch of kids who hand around and gibber about how great it is for a few months and then move on.  HLP has a disproportionate number of young adults who have made HLP and Freespace a part of their lives instead of the flavor du jour of the moment.

Uh...i'm fourteen...but i've been here for two years (one year a member, one reading)...so...uh...how about the weather?

Seriously though, thanks for the help. Game runs perfectly now, and the campaign-multi-switching-doohickey is a really cool addition.

Problems solved!
