I hope this is the right forum for this.

I have a problem with Inferno crashing when I start the mission where you need to escort the supplies to the Independence (3-4 missions into the campaign). When I click confirm on the mission briefing screen Freespace locks up and eventually goes to a blank blue screen at which point I have to restart the computer.

I am using the latest build for 3.6 which is 20040822, and I assume that it is the reason for the crashes I will try using just the original 3.6 build to see if that helps.

Inferno R1+SCP is not doable at present.  You see, one of the ships in that mission, uses a large number of textures, which exceed the limitations for the HTL element in SCP.  You have 4 options:

1 - Don't use SCP at all to play Inferno.  Play under the original fs2 retail exe file.  You won't be seeing any eye-candy that way unforntinately.

2 - Play Inferno using a pre-HTL build of SCP.  If you find the official build labeled 3.5.5, that should do it.  You'll get the glowmaps and spec lighting, but that's about it, and it'll be somewhat taxing on your system.

2 - Play Inferno using one of the Inferno buids of SCP (I think there's a thread in the SCP's new builds sub-forum with some INF builds), which have upped HTL limits, so that ship can be used.  It will have HTL and pretty much everything else the official 3.6 build has.

3 - Wait for a bit.  There is a patch for Inferno R1 that includes a replacement model for the culprit ship, which has a significantly reduced number of textures.  This patch has completed beta testing and is awaiting some tweaks before release, or perhaps another round of beta testing.  You'll have to wait a bit for Woo to comment on this.

Note to Inferno Staff:

Considering how often new players of Inferno post about this bug, I suggest that this or another thread be stickied, explaining this situation (perhaps better than I have, if I have any of my info wrong), which would then be unstickied once the patch is released.  Give it a title that can't be mistaken for something else, so to avoid it being missed.

Just use the retail one if you encounter any more bugs. Things are pretty much guaranteed to work with it.

You can change the renderer back to the old software mode, IIRC. It will run very slow though. Look under the troubleshooting section of the launcher for where the checkbox is located.
