So, yesterday star wars came out on DVD. I went out and bought it and watched RotJ with my family last night. Well, in the scene at the end where Luke sees the 3 ghosts darth's ghost IS replaced by the actor from ep 2. Those pictures weren't fake. boo frickin' hoo.

I can almost cope with that, I can even, almost, cope with Gungans invading the final celebration (though why the Jedi Tower is still standing on Coruscant, I don't know, a trophy, perhaps?). I was fine with the enhanced effects, and changing English scipt into Imperial scipt, some of them made sense, others made no difference.

What I cannot abide, is the 'Greebo shoots first' thing. It completely destroys the entire personality introduction for Han

IIRC in the origional VHS greebo wasn't even shown shooting

That's because he didn't. Han is mid-sentence with Greebo facing him, Han fires, Greebo slumps forward, Greebo never got the chance to fire. But Lucas changed it so that Greebo fires, using CG. Thus making Han not look such a 'Bad Man'

um i disagree with your evaluation - it was clear that he was firing to protect himself in the first version,  showing that greebo did shoot doesn't change that -- he still killed another sentient, either way it was in self defense

He was, but Lucas was under the impression that having Han kill Greedo when Greedo hadn't made an obvious attempt on Han's life made Han look too much like a 'Murderer'. It just seems a pointless thing to change, and, has been mentioned before, Star Wars as much about Han Solos redemtion as it was about Darth Vaders.

My problem with it is that Mos Eisley is the 'Biggest den of thieves and cut-throats' etc, and Han Solo was one of them, so why shouldn't he shoot first and ask questions later?

I just watched ep IV, and thought it was pretty fine, especially without the tape graininess.  The whole 'who shot first?' thing is pretty unimportant to the plot, the IMPORTANT thing is that somebody gets thier arm cut off with a lightsaber.....

I think I wouldn't have minded the edits like Greedo shooting first and Han stomping on Jabba's tail if they just weren't so crappily done!

When Han 'dodges' Greedo's laser shot, it's like they did a Photoshop Lasso cut, and shifted Han to the left for 5 frames then shifted him back. It just looked *soo naff*

And when he steps one Jabba's tail - again, Lasso cut, shift up for 10 frames, shift back down. Gah!

And Jabba's rendering was so crappy - The *puppet* looked more realistic FFS! (Well, I suppose it *was* real technically...)


See, some of the edit's were good - For instance, that part where Han is chasing some stormtroopers down a corridor in the Deathstar, and suddenly he's like, "AAA!" and runs away.
In the original, it's really stupid because he runs into like, 4 troopers. Not too scary.
In the edit, he runs into more like 4 HUNDRED troopers

Almost all the edits in Empire were very very good too - I actually prefer the enhanced Empire's.

They ruined the ending for RotJ IMHO 'tho - The music doesn't fit and that attempt to integrate the Ewok helmet xylophone was just so pathetic.
I liked the original better, even if the song did make me cringe and want to kill small fuzzy bear-like beings  (And no I don't mean the Ob'enn)
