Saitek Cyborg Evo Config
Anyone out there with this joystick care to share how they have it setup?  I'm trying to figure out what the best way to map the buttons is for targetting/firing/etc but keep finding that I wish I had a certain button handy without having to use the keyboard.

WELCOME TO THE BOARDS!!!

As for joystick, sorry, i never use them. The mouse gives way better control. :p

Thanks for the welcome.   I actually completely agree, I play much better with a mouse.  But I just like the experience of a joystick.  Especially with an 8 foot wide 16:9 screen in front of me :)

I just need to rig the damage cheat to cursing. Gets rid of whatever's bugging me at the moment...

Well, not really.

My joystick doesn't like FS2, apparently, otherwise I'd use it just to see how well it works. Otherwise, keyboard.

I find using the keyboard unplayable, though it might be because of sensitivity. Also I avoid using the mouse after I ruined a perfectly good mouse playing Unreal over and over. I have a Wingman instead, though I don't use all the buttons (nor the silly throttle).

Hmm.. I have that joystick... but why not use the keyboard??
my config is..:

button 1: fire primary
button 2: target in reticle
button 3: Cycle forard primary weapon
button 4: equalize shield
button 5: fire secondary weapon
button 6: change secondary weapon firerating
Hat: argument shields
Twist: banking axis

nothing for the f buttons...

I combine that with the standard keyboard setup, xept for:
q: cycle forward secondary weapon
w: change secondary weapon firerating

but that's just  me...

Now for the ever going "what is the best controller" war... I prefer keyboard  only.. gives me good accuracy and fast turning...

mouse is way too slow for me.. others fly pretty good with it though....

joystick.. Hmm.. still have to get used to that.. training in SP...

I just like using the joystick.  It's more "fun" to me.  I never used the joystick with the other Descent games, just keyboard only, but for some reason I like using it now.

The problem with the keyboard is I play in almost total dark, in a chair, in the middle of the room.    Finding that "alt-J" or even things like "H" on the keyboard sitting in my lap is sometimes difficult when playing.

I have a light-up zippy keyboard for the CarPuter that I'm considering bringing in :)

The voice commands may work out for me, except that may interfere with co-op play over the internet with a friend as we like to talk when we play.

Keyboard?  Give me a break :p.  Mouse?  Maybe for Solitaire or Halo, same thing :p.  Joystick is the only way to fly :D.

Fmstrat, I happen to have that stick.  Here's my config:

X/Y: obvious :p
Twist: bank
Throttle: throttle :p
Hat: Camera left/right/up/rear
Trigger: primaries
Button 2: secondaries
Button 3: nearest hostile
Button 4: target in reticle
Button 5: target nearest attacker
Button 6: equalize shields
Left shift button (Button 11): Afterburner
F1 Base Button: Countermeasures
F2 Base Button:  Target nearest bomb/bomber

I don't use the other base buttons; I keep both hands on the stick while playing, except when I have to use a keyboard command.  Now that I think of it, though, those other buttons might be useful for features like jumping out.

Cool, thats actually close to what I have.. but...  Do you not regularly use keys like cycling weapons or the "slow down" button?  And how often do you use the hat for views?  I was thinking of making the different directions on the hat do things other than view.
