Battlestar Galactica miniseries
I just saw it (yes, I know that it is a year old) and I must say: It rocks.

So say we all!!!!!!

You didn't miss a whole lot with the original series. The backstory in the miniseries is quite different from the original series, but the results are the same. The special effects in the original were good for their time, but compared to the new one they are WAY out of date (and it shows). The original series was very short lived.

Note: The original series was very short lived because the massive FX budget crushed any hopes of getting funding for a second series.

The effects were at least on-par with Star Wars.

There would be a reason for BSG's on par effects with Star Wars: John Dykstra. He was responsible for effects on both projects.

One of my real pet-peeves with that show was that they were constantly repeating combat special effects. It's one thing to do that with ships flying by, or something launching. But doing that in battle scenes is just annoying.

The cost of the bridge for the original series was $1 million dollars worth os monitors and construction and that was in the late 70's! Things were CHEAPER then...

I would love to have that set...

Pfff. DS9 did that all the time.

Hell, they even stole some scenes from the Generation movie.

(The bits where the Klingons are being sucked outta the breaches in Sacrifice of Angels and What You Leave Behind, were taken from the battle between the Duras BOP and the Ent-D)

I saw the first two pilots and I thik the new series has the potential to be the best sci fi TV since B5.   They were simply stunning, in cahracters, effects, and storyline.  Series starts on SciFi in January *drool*

The old one was kinda "Hey, star wars made money, lets make some too!" not bad not not great either.

Actually the sucking bits and the explosion of the Bird of Prey was taken from the movie "The Undiscovered Country", filmed in 1991. Go see it. It's great.

Yeah, close enough.

And there's one scene where a Fed fighter hits a Galor and you see a Cardassian being blown up - That's actually Garak, when his shop is exploding (I think. It could be the bomb from Dogs of War).

BSG was actually in the planning stages before Star Wars was even released. Universal saw the success of SW and thought 'hey, let's jump on this bandwagon whilst making it family friendly.' The end result is that they interfered with the storyline and the characters to an annoying degree.

The worst eps and scenes in BSG were the ones with lots of Boxey in them. Go figure.

Let us not forget that George Lucas tried to sue Universal for ripping off Star Wars (twice I think), and on each occasion the case was thrown out of court. You see, whilst the style is similar (largely due to John Dykstra I imagine) when viewed as a whole, they're actually very different.

As for the miniseries, it's good sci-fi, but it's NOT[/u] Battlestar Galactica. They ruined that in thirty seconds with the whole 'The Cylons were created by Man.' They flipping weren't!!

DS9 was like.. 50% stock footage. It's cause it cost too much. It kind of makes you have more respect for the CGI in B5, because when other shows tried to do similar CGI, they usually failed miserably.

I think that B5 had the least amount of stock CGI footage.  At least when it came to particular events.  Battle scenes I don't think were ever used more than once...I can think of a few small occasions but very rare and pretty much unnoticable.  They had some awesome CGI guys doing the stuff with not nearly as much budget.

Enterprise has in the last season really layed down the CGI in spades and its been quite good.  I've been impressed with the quality of most of it...considering its a TV show and not a feature film anyways.

The new Battlestar Galactica miniseries had some simply spectacular CGI as well.  The most impressive being the camera shots that they used.  I think, quality aside, that it was very effective as a stylistic type of approach.  They used alot of track and pan, changing the field of view of the camera as it tracked a particular ship.  Its like your watching from a camera floating out in space (some of the time anyways - you still have to suspend belief because there really isn't a camera there it just feels like one).  I was impressed.

It was stated by the people making the show that they were changing the story line. I like the new one better. Now the Cylons have a good reason for wanting to kill people, other than just being homicidal robots.

There is an actual reason why the cylons were hell bent on destroying mankind. The cylons were at war with another race and of course humans interfered and took sides against the cylons which lead to the destruction of the colonies and made the galactica go on the run and try and find the 13th colony of man....Earth.

Essentially just being homicidal robots trying to conquer everything in sight.

The Cylons were just dumbasses.

They started out as some lizard people, got conquered by their robots and then the robots decided all organic people were dicks and started wiping them out one-by-one.

The Hoomans woulda been attacked eventually, but ****ing with the Cylons and helping their current target was what prompted the attack.
