Anyone know where to get .MVE files?
The FTP finally began working for the .vp files, plus I have an alternate source at a link one forum member kindly gave me. But neither have the movie files in .MVE format, only in .AVI, and the Open Source version (one that supports avi playback in-game) does not work on the HOTU rip of FreeSpace2.

Does anyone know where can I download the .MVE movies? Or perhaps someone would be kind enough to upload their copies to the FTP (the gaming.smoothkruger.ca one) for everyone's availability?

Who told you that BS?

It's DEFINATELY working on a HOTU install (tried it myself once), check the SCP installation guide if you get stuck.

The thing is that I don't like the bare-boned HOTU install as is.

I have downloaded HOTU install, and EVERY missing file as well. All the .vp's found their place in my FreeSpace dir, and now, except for the fullscreen movies, I enjoy a full, non-restricted game.

What I want to know is will installing FS2OS overwrite the "expansion" .vp files I added to the HOTU install to make it equal to a full game? Mind you I'll have to keep it at version 1.0.

I sense much confusion.

1. Once you have downloaded all the files from that site (or FTP depending on what you used) and replaced the data folder you basically have an install of FS2 identical to the retail version 1.2. The only difference is that there may be a couple of slightly different registry entries in the retail version (There are some reg entries on the FTP at least which solve this problem) and that you don't have the MVE movies.
You don't even need to update to version 1.2 because that's what you'll be running (The HOTU version shipped with the 1.0 files in \Data but the 1.2 executables. Since the root_fs2.vp on the FTP\Website is also the 1.2 version you'll have no need to update once you have both).

2. Since there is no major differences between retail and a properly updated HOTU version there is no good reason it won't work with FS2 Open.

3. Installing FS2_open doesn't overwrite any of the original FS2 files. The files in the media.vp files will superceed the ones in the original vp files but if you remove the media.vp files you'll be back to the original install.

Anything else giving you pause just ask :)

There shall be absolutely no problems with an install as you describe (I did exactly the same for my tests).

It will not "overwrite" anything, since FS2open merely is a new executable (and launcher to configure) for your game. *The actual data will go unchanged, if you do not choose to install any custom SCP content.*

For further details, check the SCP installation guide, the SCP files list, or the Wiki.
