The truth is that, unfortunately, Liberator is right. The sad part is that to some extent Kazan is right as well. OF COURSE both side are trying to impose there will on everyone else. You act as if this is somehow new and dangerous. It's been going on since we first developed a two-party government.

Morals come from us; they're arbitrary. If they're not, there's no way to tell. They don't mean ****-- we adhere to them when we can afford it, and we bend them when they don't work. I don't know how much longer I can deal with people spouting off crap about values as though they're the laws that govern the universe. Nobody wants to be killed, tortured, raped, or stolen from. Everyone understands this. Morals are bull****.

moral practices or teachings : modes of conduct

Ford, being against killed or tortured or raped is different, it's motivated by self-interest.  If you kill someone you can expect that some day in the future that someone may decide that you deserve to die because you killed someone.  

Morals exist to protect you and others from the negative behaviors that you could take part in and not neccessarily get in trouble for.

A) morals cannot be legislated without violating the rights of other people
B) what YOU view as a negative behavior is your own issue, you cannot legislate

Like Ford said; totally arbitrary - as you said, it's 'negative' behaviours which society allows... so stuff that is provative to hurt people (theft, murder, etc) is clearly against the interests of society (for many reasons... and also, of course, group instinct which probably derives from pre-history and parental instinct).

  But what you define as a negative behaviour - or that which your 'teacher' defines - outside of that is a matter of personal opinion at best, and bias at worst; i.e. the 'damage' it does to society is based on your perception (taught or formed) of what an ideal society should be.
