Steven Beck will direct a big screen adaptation of the popular sci-fi TV series Babylon 5. The movie, titled The Memory of Shadows, is intended for theatrical release and was written by series creator J. Michael Straczynski. Production Weekly reports that the project starts filming this April in the UK.

In "Shadows," the technology of the ancient and extinct Shadow race is being unleashed upon the galaxy by an unknown force, and Earthforce intelligence officer Diane Baker, whose brother was recently killed in a mysterious explosion, it out to find out who is behind the intergalactic conspiracy.

Joining her is Galen, a techno-mage who has been charged with keeping the technology out of the hands of those who would abuse it.

Galen! Wee!

Though I'm sad that no other B5 main character was mentioned. But I guess having a new main character makes the film more easily accessible to newcomers and makes it possible to have a big-name star in it.

This is great, and Galen was a great character (interesting fact, the actors Dad, Edward Woodward has also played a technomage in Excalibur).

Considering the way Excalibur went, it's probably best that they stick to a film :)

Intended for theatrical, not being produced as a theatrical piece. Thinking about it, so were some of the greatest stories of our time ;)

Cautiously optimistic.  I LOVE Babylon 5...I look forward to seeing how this pans out.  Hopefully they get a decent budget, a good team, pull together a good story and production, and it will go down in history as a success!

I hope that for the love of all that is holy in this world, they leave out the corny ass speeches from the series.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the series, but Sheridan, Sinclair and even Ivanova made some speeches that made me want to puke.

Jeffery Doyle mentioned in a recent interview that he, among other cast members, had been tapped about doing this mentioned B5 movie we're talking about.

Problem is, Stephen "Dr. Marcus" Briggs (Biggs?)  death kinda took the wind out of their sails for awhile.

Have hope, all :).  Remember, faith manages.

God, yeah.  It had it's moments, but the "we're important - listen to us preach!" moments often irritated the hell out of me.  When it works, it's good; when it fails, it's horribly horribly awful TV.

I so hated Ivanova's thing in the Earth Civil War.

"I am death incarnated" or something she said. That was corny beyond belief. :doubt: She didn't even say that line very well. At the very least she could've made it sound sincere and not like a B-movie actress would do it.

Without these little speeches, B5 would've been much better. A few speeches after some glorious battle is fine. But not every gawddamn time they turned around.

Although, I have to exclude G'Kar though. His speeches were actually interesting and made you think.
