A good example for a decent sci-fi-series is the new Battlestar Galactica. From the episodes I've seen so far, I can honestly say that it's some seriously good stuff.

I like it in many ways; they don't dodge the issues other shows do - like supplies of food, water & fuel - and it's quite 'gritty', which is a nice change.  Some very nice touches too, like the jump-every-23-minutes bit from one of the first few episodes (maybe the very first), and sfx is good.

The only thing is that it's also very slow moving at the moment IMO - there's not a great deal happening beyond long exposition a lot of the time, and that can get dull.

I think its time Staczinsky started writing NEW scifi-stories. He's a capable story-teller, but sticking with B5 just shows that he wants to play it safe and to stick with rearranging past ideas instead of developing new ones.

You should really go and read Legions of Fire trilogy, Passing of the Techno-mages trilogy and Psi Corps trilogy. As well as To Dream in the City of Sorrows.

Actually, JMS rushed through writing Legend of The Rangers, and it did have lots of potential - Lots of faults to be "fixed", though. The original B5 pilot wasn't anything amazing, either. And lets not forget that Crusade was shaping up to be a fine show, the popular demand for the DVDs showing that. I too am cautious that TMOS is going to be another "action adventure" type B5 movie ... Thirdspace anyone? But, ITS picking up several plot elements from the dropped Crusade series (I have three of the scripts from the unaired episodes, and all I can say is - Wow, getting good.)

Still, no matter how brilliant the movie is, or no matter how many hardcore fans out there are going to be spreading the love that IS B5, I just *dont* think it can really hit it big on the big screen. Not for any faults of its own, but just the general public is blinded by TV trash these days.

It's on Sky in the Uk, I'm not sure whether it's out in the US or not.

Sky One is showing it in the UK. Don't know if anyone else is though. I know that we are getting the episodes first.

I agree BSG 2004 IS EXCELLENT so far. Ronald Moore is also a good writer considering he wrote the only good TNG Trek movie First Contact. In reguard to the remark that its slow paced, open your eyes dude!!! The stuff they're showing so far is setting the stage for some heavy duty events. I wonder if this show is written with a story arc in mind like B5.... speaking of B5...BACK TO TOPIC!!!!

B5 doing well in theaters against the Lucas flesh mass, unlikely. I've encountered many Scifi folks who have no interest in B5 at all, and my attempts to convert them was met with much resistance. I guess its soap opera-like story structure made B5 an aquired taste. I can't think of any stratedgy to get people to watch a movie based on a TV-show they've never seen or liked. Perhaps if it were presented as just some new Scifi flick and hint that its in the B5 universe, it could work.

It is slow paced.  All I ask for as a bit of proper story progression.......

Nice! Oh come now, Cpt Hercules and his space monkeys, how could you resist!?

Anyways.....

Ronald Moore stated that BSG is a war DRAMA. With action sequences of course. I love it so far. The show is very thought provoking and the issues they tackle are ones Trek and B5 would barely if not at all, touch. Watch the latest episode "Flesh and Bone"? I think its GENIOUS wrriting. This is the first Scifi show I've watched that is quite down to earth. I know that sounds strange considering its a scifi genre.

If action and fast paced escapism is what you want, then BSG may not be for you. This show focuses on the HUMAN element of the scenarios they face moreso than the scenario itself. Don,t get me wrong, I love a good dogfight and war campaign as much as the next guy. But when you start giving a damn about the characters, the war sequencecs get that much more intense.

Remember, this show is still a fledgiling, but its already starting to show a HUGE potential for greatness in the scifi genre.

WHAT R WE DOING... THIS IS A B5 THREAD!!!!!  SORRY!!! We'll take this discussion elsewhere now.
