Well, AI was a well made film, I don't doubt that, my lip trembled at the appropriate points, but the story itself wasn't really all that original. Spielberg found a formula of Children+suffering = sales, and he tends to play on that a little too much.
I won't deny he's bloody good at what he does, but I find his films a little too 'formula' these days. Close Encounters in particular broke the mold, partly because it was a huge risk by an unknown director, no-one knew how it would do, but now that Speilberg is a famous multi-millionaire, he prefers to play safe. It's strange in a way, because if I were loaded like that, I'd consider it the freedom to make more journeys into the 'unknowns' of film-making.
