Speilberg has only really made two movies :-

Schindlers List
Close Encounters

Everything else has, really been remakes, from The Colour Purple to ET to Batteries not Included to A.I.

I guess, but that would be like Spielberg comming in and helping Lucas remake ANH.

.... he better not get any ****ing ideas.

But why do they need to remake this? The original is a classic and excellent film... this... despite Depp - just seems wrong.

What next,  a remake of Zulu starring Tom Cruise and George Clooney, with Eddie Murphy as a wise-cracking Zulu tribesman?

For one thing, it's not a remake of the old movie... it's a DIFFERENT adaptation of the BOOK. They're simply ignoring the previous movie entirely and starting from scratch with the source material. Given both Burton's and Dahl's prediliction for fiendish humor, misfits and psychotics, I imagine this will be an excellent pairing. Johnny Depp would make an interesting Wonka, we'll see how that turns out.

Best part about it, though, is that Danny Elfman is going to be singing all the Oompa Loompa songs. :D

EDIT: And it's not 'They' who are remaking it. It's TIM BURTON, the guy who created Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, who reinvented Batman after Adam West made it campy. Okay, so, Planet of the Apes was lousy... but I have high expectations.

EDIT2: Just saw the trailer. Dear God, what is that horrific background music?!?

See, now I think this will be pretty good. The 70's film was utter crap IMO. It was just.... bleh. Couldn't stand it. They completely re-wrote the plot, and messed it up beyond belief. This one has an excellent actor in one of the lead roles, one of the best directors in the world, and (hopefully) will actually match the story.

EDIT: And another good sign is that the actual name of the film is the same as the title of the book! That can only be a good thing ("Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory" :doubt::rolleyes: )

Just goes to show you, they're starting with the source material, not the Gene Wilder movie. They changed the name of the original so that people wouldn't think it was about the Viet Cong.

A pox on you doubters. Burton and Depp will deliver

Bear in mind that they are not remaking the Gene Wilder film, they're making a film of the book - thus Charlie ATCF and not Willy Wonker. Rememebr that Rohl Dahl's writing was pretty damn creepy anyway, so these two creative genii are perfect for the job says I

My apologies, I assumed that they were remaking the Gene Wilder film - and I generally despire remakes.

Given the new info, and having reviewed the trailer keeping in mind that it's a new film.. perhaps it will be good after all! I do like the quasy-dark feel the entire film seems to contain - and Depps "Wonka" seems to be very... interesting indeed. A childrens story gone wrong...

I don't think that's true of A.I. at all. I thought that film was simply magnificent, especially since Spielberg was actually finishing what Kubric started.

As for this film, I think it has great potential. Tim Burton is my second favorite filmmaker, the first being the one and only Stanley Kubric.

Well, AI was a well made film, I don't doubt that, my lip trembled at the appropriate points, but the story itself wasn't really all that original. Spielberg found a formula of Children+suffering = sales, and he tends to play on that a little too much.

I won't deny he's bloody good at what he does, but I find his films a little too 'formula' these days. Close Encounters in particular broke the mold, partly because it was a huge risk by an unknown director, no-one knew how it would do, but now that Speilberg is a famous multi-millionaire, he prefers to play safe. It's strange in a way, because if I were loaded like that, I'd consider it the freedom to make more journeys into the 'unknowns' of film-making.

Well, it's arguable that there really are no original stories. The only thing original is how they're told. A.I. was quite obviously a retelling of Pinocchio.

I'd actually go see that... :nervous:

I must admit, at first glance I was "no. Just no." But then, thinking, well its Depp. And its Burton, and CATCF is actually a rather creepy book, Dear old Burton just might do it justice, so I'll keep an eye out for it.

Though it is unfortunate that now is the time of the hollywood remake. Hell, they're doing Assault of Precinct 13! Its cholo man, pure cholo. And people who've seen it know exactly what I'm talking about. Rather ironic eh?:doubt:
I have returned... Again...

Don't forget that this isn't the first Roald Dahl book that Tim Burton has done. Anyone remember James and the Giant Peach?
