LOL That's pretty much a matter of opinion, you could say the same for Asimov, since that's where the Foundation series first started appearing, in Sci-Fi weekly.
As for the story needing revamping, not really, when you consider they are not simply changing the context of the story, but changing the whole 'story' of the story, including the ending from the sounds of things, to make it so that Man kills the Martians instead of luck.
It sort of, at least in my opinon, takes away the entire point that HG Wells was trying to make in the book in the first place
