Hiya,
       I recently got my hands on a copy of Conflict: Freespace and freespace 2 released under white label. When i tried to install both of them using autorun, both produced the loading cursor for about 5 seconds and then stopped, and nothing more happened. I then explored both disc 1's for both games and tried to launch the file SETUP.exe, however, the exact same thing happened. I've also tried using the compatibility option for windows 98, both manually and using the wizard, to try and install the games but still, nothing happens. I'm all out of ideas and i was hoping that someone could help me.

These are my system specs:

2.0GHZ Intel Celeron
256RAM
Windows XP Home Edition
SIS 650 Graphics Chipset
Direct X 9.0b
40GB Hard Drive (19.7 GB free)

Odd. I have the white label version too and it works prefectly well on win XP. It could possibly be your graphics card but FS1 should work on that at least.

Anyway, the same thing seems to happen on some of my older discs as well. Theme Hospital does the same think along with Microsoft Office 97, so I'm guessing that it might be something to do with either my CD-ROM drive or my windows xp happens to be screwy.

Dude, you don't want those crappy FP Games. Get some quality Freespacing under your belt instead.

Have you tried using the same discs to install on a friend's computer? If they work there, then you know it's not a problem with the discs... something else'll need fixing.

It's a label, which is white.  You get cheap stuff with white labels on them; white is usually the cheapest form of packaging*, and the name written on black marker on the front.

In this case, it's also the name of a budget games range, owned by (IIRC) Virgin.

( I wonder if the name is an oblique reference to the Beatles White Album........)

Nothing wrong with the discs, tried it on an old toshiba  laptop with windows 95 and it installed fine.

I think it's a gerneral vinyl reference. You can buy "white label" vinyl records on the cheap.
My first copy of Freespace was the Virgin budget release too, as it happens.

Before the advent of "Store Brand" there was a thing called "Generic" with no branding of any kind.  It came in a white box with no identifying marks only the name of the contents and important information such a nutritional content(for food) or what size/cloth it was made out of.  I realize I'm old(ish(26)) and I remember when they sold generic stuff in stores, but it wasn't that long ago.
