[q]LONDON (Reuters) - The directors of a play depicting sexual abuse and murder in a Sikh temple have reluctantly scrapped their production due to fears that violent protests against it would escalate.

The directors said they stood by the play and principles of free speech, but had taken the decision to avoid a repeat of riots outside the theatre on Saturday night.

"Sadly it's clearly evident that the violent protesters have won," said Stuart Rogers, executive director of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

"We cannot operate this theatre in a state where people are throwing bricks through our windows."

But the row threatened to rumble on as another company offered to stage the play.[/q]

They've done more damage to their religion by rioting than any controversy-mongering play could ever have done.

They can't take a stand because the rioters have threatened to burn the place to the ground, and their insurance wouldn't cover members of the public injured or killed under such circumstances. However to the most part it was a peaceful protest, not the sort of pitchfork-wielding, torch-bearing mob that people are making it out to be.

I for one am against the closing of the play, however think of the ammunition the rioters have given groups like UKIP (Diet BNP) and the BNP.  They have a democratic right to protest, but thier responsobility is to protest peacefully.   The irony is, despite the images and scenes in a play, it is about a womans faith with god, and who it triumphs in the end, which is a positive ending.  Still best to see how this turns out.
