This may or may not have been asked before, but here goes:

In retail FRED, ship models are displayed with their normal textures and at (I think) a high-detail lod. In Fred_Open, they are displayed with horrible manky textures, and at a lower detail level. Why is this, and can it be changed, or is it fixed?

Not really that important, I know, but it looks nasty, and I don't like it. :p

Cheers,

pyro :)

First of all, it's FRED. Expect the unexpected.

Secondly, I think there's actually an entry in mantis on this. The reasoning for it is, you shouldn't need hi-poly ships for designing the mission, a more responsive FRED is more important. There was talk about fixering up FRED2 so you could select, or it automatically switch, LODs, but generally getting FRED2 working is much higher up on the list.

If it bothers you so much, you can always make yourself a set of FRED2 models in a VP, and switch that in when you want to use FRED (or put it in a directory and use a special -mod command with FRED, and the multi-mod feature with fs2_open :p)

You could try -fredhtl command line I used it with Fred2 and ship textures came out fine for me.

...except all paths and points are completely out of position.  As for the low LODS in FRED, thats partially to improve performance, and partially to avoid crashing with Hi-poly models.  Place a Hi-poly Fenris (in non-HTL mode) on the grid, use the zoom-on-selected-object button, then select a slow zoom rate and close in.  Now, FRED will still switch to LOD0, but only at very close range.  Once the "camera" is basically in contact with the Fenris, it'll switch to LOD0, prompting FRED to crash.

I just realised that everything is out of position in HTL, so I switched back. Also, waypoints, grid position indicators etc. are messed up even in non-htl mode....

What version of FRED are you using?

You wont get working waypoints beyond 3.5.5, but this was brought up at the SCP meeting a few weeks ago and is apparently going to be bumped up the priority list for fixage.

I put back in the original code for displaying the waypoints and it magically fixed the problem.
