Where's my screenies?
OK, I don't know if I'm doing something funny, or wrong, or if it's actually a bug, known or not... but I was playing Machina Terra today, trying to get screenshots of things that'll either look awesome for mystery pics, or are bugs, and I'd say I hit print screen about 8 times, but the game never stammered, and the screenies aren't in any of the folders.

Is there a bug with taking screenshots with -mod enabled?

if you're running in opengl, they appear as glscreenXX.tga

No, it was Direct X...

And BTW; I was going the screenshots for DaBrain (in the postfilter thread, in OGL) and there was no gl before the screenies' names from those shots.

download that and run it from desktop, when you hit print screen on the keyboard it will grab shots and dump it in BMP format where you ran the program from.

Perhaps, while we're here, someone could tell me why my screenshots are no longer being taken in .tga format, but instead are .bmps?

AND when you have three of them, the next one will overwrite the first, and the fifth overate the second, and the sixth overwrite the third, and the seventh overwrite the first/fourth, ad naseum.

1) OpenGL takes screens in .tga. D3D takes then in .bmp

2) When you restart Freespace, the screenshot numbering is also restarted.

Can that be stopped, though? Could the engine be made to append the list, instead of overwrite it?

Drunken pirate... what is that? :wtf: I'm leary of running a third program while running FS2 just to take screenies. I'm just curious why screens didn't work, when they did previously.  It's probably my fault, but I had this gorgeous shot of a ********* and two ****** ships and I wanted to show them to the MT crew.

It's a simple screengrabber -30k, I'm not telling you to download it, I am just posting it if you cannot rectify your screen capturing problem. I have far better things to do than post malicious programs on internet forums.

No... I wasn't accusing you of anything...  I just wanted the program to work the way it should.

I do appreciate your effort, though. :)

My 20041230 (20050103) build has new screenshot code for OpenGL.  The old stuff was way too slow and with faster video cards various parts of the screen went missing in the saved pic.  It will be named screen??.tga (?? being 00 for first shot, 01 for second, etc.) and will end up in the base of root[0].  In other words the files will go in the main Freespace2 directory, or if -mod is used the pic will go in that directory.

I did it that way because it's easier to keep those things straight when they are better organized.  The D3D code can be modified the same way but I didn't do it for my builds.  The new OpenGL screenshot code is in CVS though so WMCoolmon's new build has it too.

I'm ready to submit this to mantis, since no screenshots are being saved with DX using the 20050103 build, but it may still be my PC.

I've been having trouble getting some things to run correctly. Mainly install programs. I'll double click them, and they won't do anything , even though they are listed as using memory and being active in the processes window... then all of a sudde, 5 instances of the program. winxp is buggy as hell.

If I wasn't unsure if it was this, or something new altogether, I'd report this to mantis... :doubt:

Well, I have noticed that while using a debug build in windowed mode I can't seem to save screenshots (Although that's from within VC++.net)

...it was windowed, although not debug. Would that have anything to do with it?

No...no it isn't. I should have been more clear. This is for a single instance of running the game. It will only allow me three screenshots before it begins overwriting previous screens under any circumstances. I take nine in one mission and only find three in the main FS folder.

I was having trouble with this a while ago, went and took screenies for all the aotd ships, and they all dissapeared. I think I might have switched builds or something, but next time I tried it, all of the screenies worked. I've noticed that when you're taking the screenie, you get a moment of visual/sound lag, and use that to check.

I'd also like to propose that a confirmation message pops up in the messages as a "screenshot saved as screenxx.bmp/tga".
