Why? Given from the description The Cambridge Learner's dictionary says, I do not see any weirdness about it.

It's usually used as a noun, not a verb, for one thing.  And yes, it's very formal.

A more appropriate word in that sentence would be "reassure".

Try this.  Hit the edit link on the main page and wait for the userid screen to come up.  Put in your name (two capitol letters,, say, NgtM1r) and leave the password space blank and hit okay.  Should get you into the edit screen for the main page.  Click the links to get you back out to the page and try from there.  Hopefully, it should work.
