I really MUST learn to take one thing at a time.
i've noticed that the FS2 music was too vocal. i found some really cool music that i have right here on my desktop thjat i can show you. you'll need something like Irfanview or WinAmp to view the MIDI's. I need someone to help me convert them.

track 1

track 2

it's pretty cool IMO. it also kinda matches the tone on the 2nd one in battles. and, it's also almost the right length.
To consider the Earth as the only populated world in infinite space is as absurd as to assert that in an entire field of millet, only one grain will grow. - Metrodorus of Chios
I wept. Mysterious forces beyond my ken had reached into my beautiful mission and energized its pilots with inhuman bomb-firing abilities. I could only imagine the GTVA warriors giving a mighty KIAAIIIIIII shout as they worked their triggers, their biceps bulging with sinew after years of Ivan Drago-esque steroid therapy and weight training. - General Battuta

poll question: do you like these?

Answers:
Yes.
No.
Needs different music.

Eh, If I was gonna replace FS music with VG midis, I'd probably try to find something a bit more appropriate then sonic.  Though, I do have an orchestrated version of final zone from the first game that would probably be quite appropriate for some of the late game briefings.  I'd tend to favor something with a more spacey origin though, maybe a few tunes from The Guardian Legend, maybe a couple from the Thunder force series.

But then, I'd also probably plug the battle theme from Magic of Schezerade in there somewhere, and Cervante's theme from Soul blade for the last couple of missions, so I may just be odd.

As for 'converting' it, there are a couple of ways.  If quality is a concern, you're best bet is probably getting a copy of synthfont and finding yourself a giant honking HQ soundfont bank, then using the play to disk feature.  I believe the most recent versions of winamp can use diskwriter and the MS directmusic synth to create .wavs from midi files, though quality is only so so.

First step only use programs that work best

Images - irfran view or photoshop

recordign - I use goldwave (should be able to make midi's with it but not sure I dislike midi's, so get sudacity from TBP thread to check)

The thing is with taking music from well known sources made for the same purpose (e.g. taking another game's music) is that I think people just won't think it's professional - my local news sometimes takes makes from John Williams, for example, (TV taking from the movies ~ still video :) ) and it sounds really wierd once you hear. "Hey ! Isn't that Saving Private Ryan? What does it have to do with the death of a former PM?"

Then there's the whole midi -> wav conversion thing. Ouch.
Long time ago, you see, there was this thing called the VBB and... oh, nevermind.

MIDIs can sound surprisingly good with the right soundfont.

Like Singh said audacity should do that, or you might be able to use Winamp's file output plugin to convert the MIDIs.

These musics will certainly be good for PacMan, but not FreeSpace.

Midi won't mix direct to Audio without something like Virtual Synths, you need a creative can with a 'What U Hear' channel, and record it manually through that before trimming it.

I would have a listen to the midi files but they seem to have vanished :(

Doesn't matter to me.  I originally got it off VG music though, so if this is a distributed thing, might need to check in on it.  The original author is Avaine and the tune in the stage is set from Final Fantasy 8.

well, track #2 sounded pretty good to replace the "battle-style" music.
