Apparently, he shot himself in the head at his compound in Colorado.

its kind of hard to explain unless you already know. Author/journalist/junkie/troublemaker extrordinaire.

Probably his most famous book, and subsequent movie starring Johhny Depp, is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
