Lett had arrived at work and "was disgruntled for some reason," Detective Sgt. Jeff Barnes said.

Something is very wrong with the american workplace. Either long hours, stress environment, verbal abuse, whatever. But it is causing lots of people to simply "loose it", and go berserk. I think this warrants a serious study. And if corroborated, it needs a serious reform. The American authorities need to pay atention to this, otherwise we will be seeing a repeat of this, in a very short period. This was the 3rd story of its kind in a week or so.

I know americans work longer hours than any other western nation. Remember Japan? They are workaholics over there, and the suicide rate is through the roof. I guess they have a diferent way of dealing with it than we westerners.

Having the weapon removed from the equation might help prevent lots of such attacks, but something must be done that adresses the core of the issue. americans need to relax more, go on vacation more often, and work less hours. Or maybe they just need better bosses. But whatever it is, it is causing these people to go homicidal on their colegues...

I think it's a societal issue - the constant barrage of what you "shouldn't do" or "shouldn't say" etc

And the fact someone who drives a forklift for Pepsi get's fired after drinking Coca Cola on an extremely hot day with nothing else near is probably a help too.

If that kind of work garantuee is in place, I can see why someone would rather go down shooting then file a complaint.....

I remember watching, not so long ago, a European businessman talking about average days holiday in Europe. I think it was after the abolishment of the French 35-Hour working week.

He was of the opinion that Europe was 'behind' America because in Europe there is an average of 25 days leave a year wheras in the US the average is 10. Can you tell he was Employer and not an Employee? ;)

Personally, I think 10-days leave is a large portion of the problem, you have no life other than the life your job dictates to you, you feel trapped and there's no release.

Personally, I think if you tried transplanting the 10 days annual leave in Europe, not only would you get the worlds first continent-wide strikes, but the outcome would be pretty similar to this.

I think its the conflict between: what is/what one thinks should be.
When the "should be" is a creation of someone else but the one who thinks..

Oh come on. If all the rest of us can get by in the modern workplace without slaughtering our co-workers then you can't blame society for the psychotic tendencies of a very small few.

Sorry, but is this really news? I mean, I'm sure there's a murder somewhere in the world every second, but that's no reason to post about it.

I think we can all agree that work conditions, even in western countries, a for the most part dehumanizing and spirit-crushing.

If you count the amount of Postals compared to the amount of Workers, the P/W amount is mighty off for the States too. At least when I'm quite sure company shootings are quite rare over here. And we only had one school-shooting in, well, ever?

I wonder if the guy was on antidepressants. It seems to me that they do more harm than good. I always find it amusing that one of the side effects is "depression".

actually the guy drove for miller and was fired for drinking a bud light.  which i think is just about the dumbest thing i ever heard.  now our companies dictate what we can drink as a condition of employment?  i could understand if he brought it into the workplace....beer and forklifts don't work together....well ok sometimes they do, but you get my meaning.

what's next?  wal mart employee fired for shopping on the internet and not at wal mart?

Maybe he was just fired for drinking alcohol on the job and just happened to be drinking a different beer? Like you said, alcohol + forklift doesn't work...But it's something some media would point out readily.

Taiji?  If it's any of that new-age yoga crap, screw it. :p I know that nothing relaxes me more than an hour or two of fast-paced Descent action. :D

They make it sound easy, but I guess you don't get the deep benefits until you get into the advanced stuff. I'd reccomed at least trying it once because just a little bit each day helped me deal with stress in the past. And who knows, it might just prevent one of you from going postal! :)
