Freespace 1 Manual (and tutorials)
Sup internet.

I've already recieved some great (and holy crap fast) help on getting the FS1 port's cutscenes to work properly in-game.  I really appreciate that.

Now, in an attempt to overstay my welcome...

I'm having a blast with Freespace 1.  First time I've played any space sim, first time I've played anything requiring a joystick.  Needless to say, I'm god-awful.  I'm having a blast, but it's all quite daunting.  Target hostile, target target, target target's target, target target's subsystem's next door neighbor's foot fetish, etc.  Pretty hardcore stuff, it's admirable that people can rock at it.  Anyways, I'm rambling...

I'm looking for a download (I would assume pdf) of the Freespace 1 manual, so I can read-up on the game and its controls, get a better feel for it instead of while getting shot apart on the field (the SPACE field).

I think there were supposed to be training missions or something, according to FAQs for FS1 and what-not, but I dunno how to get them to work.  It sends me straight to the first mission (protect the convoy), and while I can figure out things enough to get through it (not in a heroic fashion, mind you...in a HEY WING MAN KILL THESE GUYS HOLY JESUS fashion) I'd like to either have a manual to learn from, or the tutorials to practice with.

I take and I take, and you guys just give.  If you can help me with either of those problems, (or both, that'd be fantastic) I'd be ecstatic.  Ego stroke, ego stroke.  You guys rock.

EDIT:  I wasn't sure if this belonged here or the Source Code forum.  I apologize if this requires a move.

Freespace 1 Manual (and tutorials)
I think I have the PDF for both FS1 & 2s' manuals sitting around somewhere, I'll put it up when I'm finished work this evening (in about 7-8 hours or so), asusming no-one else has.

If you're playing the FS1 - to - FS2 port, then maybe they simply didn't port over the training missions.

The Freespace 2 manual is at HOTU - http://www.the-underdogs.org/games/f/freespace2/files/freespace2-m.zip - a lot of the controls (in fact pretty much all of the basic targeting etc ones I think) are the same between FS 1 & 2, so it's a stopgap if nothing else.

The FS1 port basically uses the controls for FS2. AFAIK I don't think there are any differences.

Putting up the manuals for download isn't a bad idea though. I'll have to look into that.

The manual's pretty dry, as these things go. If you're looking for detailed universe fiction, you're better off reading through the techroom (Does that work with the port?)

I would definitely recommend playing through the first three training missions of Freespace 2, to familiarize yourself with the basic controls. You'll still need some help with using countermeasures, killing turrets and probably the ECS as well, though. We didn't port over the FS1 training missions at all.

Skip the command briefing if you've never played FS1 before though.

Or you could go through FS2, then head back to FS1 as a 'prequel.' Your choice, really.

True but if you've got them both you might as well go through them in order. Makes a lot more sense that way :D
