40k Mod / Campaign Idea
I'm just wondering would a mod / campaign based in the Warhammer40k universe interest anyone?

I've been pondering this for a while now. Once TAP's out I was considering making a small mod / campaign based in the 40k universe.

Probably featuring ships from Tau and Chaos, maybe the Space Marines as well.

It wouldn't be anything overly grand, probably just a few fighters to begin with.

Was just wondering if anyone would enjoy playing something like this?

Too many total conversions running already.
New comment: Total conversions need the most work. They need a lot of work in modelling, texturing and UVMapping unless you convert all the ships from a given source instead of remodelling them completely. You still need to optimise those models to FS.

Hmm, well from what I know, the Warhammer40k universe is more about cap ship combat, still I may be wrong.

I think you might run into lack of support problems, it isn't nearly as widely known as the subject material for the other TCs currently underway here. Also many of the other TCs were able to draw, to some extent, on pre-existing modelling work.

As for the feasiblity of actual gameplay mechanics, I have no idea.

I was planning on just making it myself. Unless people offered to help.
But small scale.

The Gothic series of 40k is based on space combat and is heavily orientated around capital ships yes. But with a little imagination...

I picked the 40k universe because I like the atmosphere and potential storylines one could develop.
I was just seeing what people would think of it, and if they'd bother downloading it.

Maybe rather than FS2 I could do it for a ShootEmUp instead.
But that usually requires more work, and there are few that come to mind that would be a fitting engine. Maybe FarCry's engine...

I'd still like to make some smaller project for FS2 one day.
Maybe just use a couple of the existing mods etc.

It would be cool to do. Maybe if you just used the existing mods and ships to run some of the story lines. 40K is an extreamly daft but very interesting and fun universe where if you can throw your brain out the window it can be awsom.

It would be fun to do some stories, go for it if you can!!

How about this? It's not a BFG ship, but the architecture is basically the same.

Apologies for the crap quality pic.... :doubt:

The nose needs some recessed parts, but it's good anyway.

Yeah looks cool.

I just thought, maybe we could do an open / Community mod.
So everyone has access, and can contribute whenever they get the inspiration / effort.
Would be slower paced yes, but there is plenty of potential in it.
So it would just be a few extra ships for FS2 open, but if it took off eventually it could be a TC.

This idea might work for something akin to the Ferrium universe as well.

Maybe we make up a new universe, or place it couple of extra centuries in the future of FS2.
Everyone contributes whatever they can.

Anyone else go for this idea?

I'm going to try making some more Terran ships along the same lines, and I'm trying to make a couple of Vasudan ships using Eldar cruiser designs as well, so I suppose it could be done...

I've actually just bought on of the Imperial Armour books as I fancy doing some 40k stuff. I bought a Tau Hammerhead kit but there isn't much in the way of images with it (I was hoping for some Airfix style plans)

Yeah.

It would be fun just to mod a couple of ships from the 40k universe. And maybe someone at the Fred academy could make a mission with some of them. :)

I would love to help with this, call me in a few months as I'm getting better at modeling skills.  To chaos with it, if you send me some good modeling quality photos, I can start the LOD4 right now.  no promises on when I'll be done though, I'm not a professional modeler by any reach.  My prefrence is Tau/Ork/Necron in that order.

Also, BFG (battle fleet gothic) does use fighters, even if it simplifies them in the extream.  I could quite easely see the player being a member of an elite squadron of Imperial/(dark)eldar/Tau/Orc/Necron/(Chaos)Space Marrine/Tyrianid fighters.  In point of fact, a few months ago, I went looking for a mod for this.

Just need to remember to start small, and not to get hungup on the unimportant details like proper ship modles, voice acting, or perfict features.  I, and I asume some outher people, would be satisfied with placeholders in the missions untell modles could be compleated.

I would love to see some 40k material in FS2, but there just isn't enough support for a full mod.

I had a look at some of the images from BFG the other day and the scale and detail on some of the ships would be extremely difficult to accomplish even with time and FSO.

But don't let me stop anyone from doing it. Why not work on a 40k ship for practice and see where it takes you? :)

I might have a go at the Tau fighter after I complete the ship I'm working on now.
Probably be a few weeks until I get around to it though. :)

Well, only a madman would start with anything from the imperial, chaos, or spacemarine fleets.  There's just too much detail, unless you've got a realy good texture artist, But with the Tau ships you have a lot more flowing lines and curves to work with, and less on the over embelished substructer(sp)  now to hunt down a few photograph quality shots...

I love the imperial navy ships. I'd play this mod, but atm I wouldn't have the time to devote to it to be of any help.

Just check out the website for reference pics:
http://us.games-workshop.com/games/bfg/hobby/showcase/imperial.htm

Some of those things have hundreds of cannons per side. It would be indeed difficult to model.
When bump mapping becomes available to us, it will make it easier to convey the weapons etc.

Even the Tau have some rather cluttered designs as well though.
Still would be very impressive ingame, if someone could pull just one of those cruisers off... :)
