Damn this finnicky tech - I unplugged it before it was ready, because I thought I stopped it, but it obviously wasn't ready. Now, it won't shut off, it won't do anything, it's completely frozen on the do not connect screen. The computer makes a noise when I plug it in, but the ipod won't show up. I tried restarting the computer, didn't work, I tried restarting the ipod, but it won't shut off or do anything.
Help me please?

Take the battery out? That usually resets things. Or is it a built-in power pack?

Unplugging USB devices when they're still working is bad news - I killed a pen drive doing that, and I know several people who've had the same thing happen.

Sorry I'm not more help. Hope you get it fixed - it's a rather expensive paperweight otherwise...

It's built in. It doesn't even register as charging when it's plugged in anymore.

On further inspection, the "Inserted device" icon pops up when I plug it in, but I get nothing in it. Also, it pops up in the Device manager as a "USB Mass storage device", however, when I open it, it says that "This device cannot start". I uninstalled it, and am downloading the new updates.

Hm... try leaving it on for a while, let the battery run down completely so it shuts off. Then see if you can recharge it.

Try a Google search for what happens if you unplug an iPod when you shouldn't, maybe someone out there can help.

Otherwise I would recommend taking it to an Apple Store and having them take a look at it. Remember to register at the Genius Bar at least an hour in advance, though; it's swamped.

reset it, there are instrcutions on the apple site, it involves holding down a couple buttons (play and menu, I think) for 10-20 seconds.

It's on the apple site.

It doesn't shut down at all.
Not by holding play, not by holding menu and play, it doesn't do anything.
Right now I'm just waiting for the 12+ hour battery life to run out.

I've been told by Apple reps to let the battery run dead and then recharge and see if that helps.

Bloody iPods :)

I'm personally looking at the Zen Micro...nearly the same price and got some nice other features.

You do have USB 2.0 I assume? Obvious question I know, but always best to start with the basics.

The battery is discharged, I plug it in, and I get the Apple sign for a few seconds. It blinks and the HD spins up, and then it goes to a low battery warning screen. After that, nothing happens.

EDIT: After fiddling with it for a bit, I got it to update my songs and play them...time will tell if the fix is really a fix, tho. Thanks for the help all :)

Hurrah!!

I'm pretty sure that if that ever happens again, you can just reset it...

SERIOUSLY...! | {The Sandvich Bar} - Rhino-FS2 Tutorial | CapShip Turret Upgrade | The Complete FS2 Ship List | System Background Package

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

I want the iRiver PMP140, 40GB HD, 3,5" 320X240 TFT, and support for DivX, MP3, WMA, JPG, BMP, AVI and then some.

Bit out of my price range, though. And by the time I can afford it, I'm probably looking at something with Windows Media Centre or Windows Portable running on it, which isn't my cup of tea.

Funny thing. I plugged my iPod in about ten minutes ago and it's just flashing "Do not disconnect" over and over. All I wanted to do was to update the songs on it from iTunes on my computer but it's not even showing up in iTunes. Just gonna leave it for a bit and see what happens I guess.

They can take a long time to charge...

If you have a real problem, you should be able to send it back for battery replacement

iPods are a phenomena now, and with so many millions sold, you are bound to hear more stories about bad 'uns, but I reckon they are pretty good for a consumer electronics product...

I don't know why it does that, but it does flash it for a long time. If you want, try to stop it in the unplug/plug hardware thing.
Mine does it for awhile too, that's why I unplugged it before it was done - oops! :D

And if it's good "for a consumer product," then what are you comparing it to? :wtf: A military MP3 pllayer? :p

They're just better. ;) The Creative interface software is horrible, from what I've seen - evil auto-synch thing gets very annoying, and you have to use Media Player for it. My computing teacher got one, and he sold it within a week 'cos it annoyed him so much. iRivers are just drag-and-drop for any files. The sound quality is meant to be better as well (from the reviews I've read). I'm looking to get the H320 or 340, but I've gotta save up first, and that means no cds or booze. It's a dilemma.....
