...to test something for me.  I can't tell if these things are going to be too great of a performance hit or not.  If you've got a top-level system you're welcome to have a look, but I'm really interested in how a ~2 year old system benches this.  When I've got a 2 and a half megs of pof data, and another meg of ibx cache, plus textures, I'm getting a tad bit concerned.  All I'm asking for is to open up tables and change something to use this model, load it up in mission (preferably something that's easy to benchmark) and see how much slowdown you get from this model alone.  DON'T REPLACE A CARGO CONTAINER WITH IT AND LOAD A MISSION FULL OF CARGO CONTAINERS.  YOU AREN'T SUPPOSED TO HAVE 20 OF THESE IN A MISSION AT A TIME.

I don't have any problem with multiple ships of this complexity onscreen at a time, but I know my configuration is hardly typical.  So go, test, discuss.

I've a 2800+. It operates at 2.08, but it's equivalent to a p4 2.8. Is that Midrange?

Ok, since there's a bit of a discrepency in what constitutes "midrange", these are my PC stats.

Intel P4 3.6GHz
1Gb DDR(400?) RAM
Raedon X800-XT (256Mb)

If you're significantly below that any any category, then you're closer to midrange than I am.

But most importantly, just test the damn thing

I'll see about it in game, but AFAIK, the IBX replaces the pof file when FS loads it... or something like that...

IBX keeps the game from generating proper index buffers for each model each time its loaded IIRC, so it drastically reduces load times.  POF data, such as paths, etc, is still read in from the pof and the model data is still stored there in case the ibx data needs to be regenerated for some reason.  I just included it because if you've got issues with load time, it helps facillitate testing.

yeah... well... I'd test it, but it seems that FS2 is being a primidonna at the moment. Been giving me trouble all bloody day.  I'll see how it goes, I guess.

I didn't get any serious slowdowns (no more than any other similarly high poly ships anyway) but there were weird things going on when I shot at it (with a subach). It looked like it was trying rotating around, but is speed never got above zero (it would if it were a kinetic weapon effect). Dunno what was going on.

MOI data missing, and improper mass, more than likely...

It's MOI hasn't been set, though it's not actually moving (0 velocity) because it has more than enough mass (a little over 33 million units, IIRC).  The spinnyness is due to a radically improper MOI, but I'm currently just using what the exporter throws out until I have time to tweak.  It's not supposed to be a release mesh, so I didn't bother setting that stuff up.
