A Greeting And A Question
Hello there, everyone. I've just signed up to the Hard Light Production forums, and I wasn't sure where to introduce myself, so I thought I might as well do it while ask a question.

First of all, I just want to make it clear how much I love the fact that these forums exist. I played the original Descent: Freespace (called Conflict: Freespace over here :ick: ) when it first came out, as I absolutely loved space sims. I fell in love with the incredible gameplay and the amazing story. So when [Freespace 2 came out, I snapped that up, and my God, what a game. I've looked for ages in vain of a place to discuss this awesome series, and now I've finally found it.

The Shivans are surely the most mysterious race ever (even more so than the Ancients, at least we find out things about their society) and I just find everything about them so fascinating. I've lurked on these forums a while, and I read the whole Shivan Manifesto in one go, I was so gripped. I know it's a touchy subject with you guys, but I always hoped for a Freespace 3 (Threespace?), but when I read that quote, "Think of the Shivans as a symptom of a much larger problem", that sent me over the edge. It makes me die inside knowing we won't find out what the Shivans truly are, or what happened at Capella, but maybe it's a good thing. It makes them all the more mysterious.

Anyway, to the question I wanted to ask. One thing I never understood about Freespace 2 was that they never allowed you to replay the mission where Capella goes supernova. Do you guys know why that is, or if there is a way to replay it? The second time I played the game, knowing I wouldn't be able to replay the mission, I just pointed my ship at the star and watched as it overtook the Sathani and all the other ships. I'd love to be able to see that whenever I want, so is there a way?

Sorry about the ridiculous post length, just thought I'd be polite and introduce myself.

What do you mean you couldn't replay the mission? When you've finished the campaign (either succeeding or failed) simply go back into the ready room and you can play the last mission again.

[V] are actually praised for doing it this way precisely because it lets you see both endings.

Seriously? I haven't played the game in a while, but from what I can remember, whenever I went back to replay that mission, it'd always let me play the first part of the mission, but never the second part where the Shivans actually take out Capella. Maybe it's something wrong with my copy?

It's been a while since I played the campaign to the end but it definately should let you replay the last mission.

What happens when you complete the penultimate mission? It should red-alert to the next one.

It gets to the stage where you're dropped into that Red Alert briefing, but I never actually see that. It just basically goes back to the Mission Select screen, if I remember rightly.

It definately shouldn't do that. I've played both missions without having to complete FS2 again and I'm sure most people have done the same. You're playing the mission in the tech room or in the ready room?

The embarassing part is that it's been so long since I played the original campaign that I actually don't remember :nervous:

Bah, I don't know. It's been years since I've played, and I've only recently started playing through the first game again, so maybe I was just doing something stupid before. Cheers for the help.

And thanks for the welcomes, guys. Keep the topics about the Shivans coming, I can't get enough of that stuff!

The way it works on my copy of the game, is that once you're done with the campaign, and took one specific ending, the game throws you to the main hall. After that, I'd just click on the "Ready Room" again, and it'd load the last "in-mission" briefing. I'd be given a chance to replay it with the second ending, and the second ending cutscene would save in the cutscenes menu in the techroom.

A Greeting And A Question
:welcome: raiden.

emergency exits are to your left and right, non-working shotguns are under your seat, flamethrowers are in the hall closet. if you see a Shivan while crawling in the air ducts, it's just Carl, just give him your lunch/lunch money and he'll leave you alone (once he maimed me for no ****ing reason).

and a word of advice: never, EVER mention the words freespace and the number 3 together. trust me...
To consider the Earth as the only populated world in infinite space is as absurd as to assert that in an entire field of millet, only one grain will grow. - Metrodorus of Chios
I wept. Mysterious forces beyond my ken had reached into my beautiful mission and energized its pilots with inhuman bomb-firing abilities. I could only imagine the GTVA warriors giving a mighty KIAAIIIIIII shout as they worked their triggers, their biceps bulging with sinew after years of Ivan Drago-esque steroid therapy and weight training. - General Battuta

Too late. :p

On that subject though, I like to subscribe to the theory that the Shivan's destruction of Capella was somehow a method for them to get to wherever it is their home is, and they will never return. If you think about it that way, you can accept it as the end of the story, and just accept the fact that the humans will never understand the mysteries of the Shivans. The only thing left to do is rebuild.

Goddamn, I love this game.

heh, true dat.

i wonder if anyone will make a campaign where you discover the Shivan's homeworld?

i wonder if the binary system found in "The Lion's Den" is where they come from, and those different systems are shipyards, etc?

That mission causes me so much heartache! More than anything, I want to get through that other portal that's miles away from the one you come in through! Is there any way to do that? Obviously, I'm guessing not.

This is one the things that sometimes makes me happy there will be no "Threespace". In some ways I really don't want the questions we all have answered, 'cause it would ruin the whole mythos.

But on the other hand...damn...Freespace3.

I guess I'd better shut up about this, 'cause it seems to piss you guys off. But you gotta understand, I have friends that love my two other gaming obsessions (Shenmue and Metal Gear Solid, in case you were wondering) but I'm the only one who likes Freespace, so I never have anyone else to talk to about it!

The reason why we hate the term FS3 is Derek Smart. I'd better not say anything else here.

"The Lion's Den" was enormously fun. although it scared the **** out of me when right off the bat I see a Sathanas racing towards me and Snipes shouting "DIVE, DIVE, DIVE! HIT YOUR BURNERS PILOT!"

Once i experimented with going up instead of down, and trying to type in the cheats and then making myself collision-free... none of them worked...

The reason why we hate FS3 goes back long before Derek Smart. It's basically because everyone gets sick and tired of new people appearing and saying "When is FS3 coming out!!!!1111"

After you've heard that about a thousand times it begins to get on your nerves.

Now that it's been so long since FS2 came out no one does that but the posts that come along lamenting the fact that there won't be a FS3 can be as bad if they get over done. However since they don't require a reply they don't get annoying anywhere near as quickly.
